The Other Side of Symmetry

In all things there is good and not so good . . . Love the twin chairs in this room and the piece over the sofa provides the unexpected .
With all that is going on in this space, the symmetry of the matching chairs, pillows and lamps keeps this space from going over the top.

I also like the quietness of the symmetry in this room. The architectural elements of this room give it a focal and isn't it just wonderful ?

The art of this space creates so much interest that the symmetry again keeps things in balance. I wanted to show the other side of symmetry, I hope we never forget to use it with caution, but do use it, for it is wonderful when done right. (This post is to follow the one before.)

  1. I am REALLY big on symmetry! I prefer things to look wellbalanced. But at the same time, very tasteful. Which is why I probably love all of the rooms above!

  5. I am an asymmetrical type of gal but there are times when balance is called for. Nice post with good thoughts. I actually chose the fabric on the chairs in the first picture for a client that I am working with right now....then saw it in the magazine.

  6. this is exactly how i would like to use symmentry, it makes a room look balanced yet not so formal. For me if my room was too symmetrical it would feel too formal and im just not a formal type girl. Great photos!!!

  9. Hi Vicky, I commented last night but I was so tired, I must not have sent it right. Anyway, I loved this follow up. I want the bedroom in the last photo. So charming, and the chair fabric in the first pic is the same as my living room drapery. Love it!

  11. I like symmetry also lol... The last bedroom pic is really nice..I'm thinking of adding beams to our new master too..Love these set of pics better than the last set lol...you might as well just have a mirrored wall lol since everything on the opposite side was exactly the same as the other side!

  12. I prefer symmetry when you to provide a balance, but not formality. Sometimes it absolutely makes a space look "put together" instead of designed, I guess the expected, I like the unexpected.

  14. Carol, I knew I had seen that fabric somewhere...I want you to start a blog..you are not sharing all your talent either. Juju, again I tried and failed to leave you a comment.

  15. That fabric is "in the works" and I will definitely post when finished. It is for "phase 2" of our project. Phase 1 is almost finished, will do a "show and tell"!!! :>)

  16. Great post. That is something that I try to be so careful with. It is so easy to overdo it and to under-do it. I find your posts very educational, I am a decorator wanna-be in my opinion. Thanks again, and thank you for commenting on my blog, I am trying to chronicle the changes we are making to our little bungalow for my own enjoyment and for my friends and relatives. And blogging allows me to also find help when I need it from some of you wonderful ladies! Hugs, ~cindy s~

  17. I feel what makes these spaces work; is the varying sized elements much lighter is scale that frame the heavier 'n weighted identical ones. (Hope that makes sense.)

Super post and great examples Vicky. -Brenda-

  18. I'm so flattered that you think I would even know HOW to do a blog. I don't have time right now to start one, but maybe in the Fall when I'm an Empty Nester. I'm working on pillows today. Be on the lookout, Vicky!

  19. Love that Haskell Harris living room and have been thinking of ways to pull that look off in my own home. Just the right amount of "symmetry" to help "balance" everything else.
I went back to your previous post and completely agree with you that too much symmetry is awful. Boring, predictable, easy. Adding something unexpected or just a bit off-kilter, but still managing to balance the overall look, is so much more interesting to look at. And more challenging to design... which just adds to the fun, as far as I'm concerned.

  20. I am a fan of symmetry..the more the better! I especially like the second photo of the prints and leopard print cushions on the chairs. The wall rack over the sofa in the first photo looks a bit clunky to me. Deborah

  21. Nice examples. And I like -- what was it, the third image? -- what they did on the twin beds. Same rectangular pillows but in different patterned color. Nice balance without being predictable. As usual, a great post. thx! stay cool -s

  25. I can't really call myself a "decorator", but a word came to me before I saw all your comments, and that seems to be the agreement. Maybe not symmetry, but BALANCED. I think that's the key for my decorating concepts. Weight, color, form, all needs to be balanced.
    Great posts.
