BEWARE

I know we have all heard it by now that "Wallpaper" is making a come back. Don't say you were not warned to walk away . . .
Even the most beautiful, will put you in a box that is hard to step out of. Soon the walls will be caving in and there will be no stopping your suffering.

I do think this is pretty, but I have fallen for that trick before . . . Don't be deceived by the wrapping!

Even the great " Mr. Smith" has shown he too can lose control. Will you be next?

  2. No....I had wallpaper for years, when I finally removed all of it, and some rooms required just putting up new sheetrock.. I said NEVER again. Much easier to buy a can of paint and just change the color than remove wallpaper.

  3. I am finally down to just one little room (the powder room) with wallpaper. My late 80s house had SO much wallpaper - in the kitchen (which had a huge wall in the breakfast room covered in wallpaper), in the dining room, the master bathroom, and 2 other bathrooms. SLowly but surely, it has all come down. Will I return to wallpaper, or do wallpaper in my next house? No way. Or, I might do a pretty wallpaper in the powder room, but that's it!

  5. Eeeek no. Even the loveliest ones get old quick and are SO hard to get off.

  6. THANK YOU.

I like wallpaper in extremely limited doses. In a foyer, a powder room ... maybe a study. Rooms where you don't mind feeling a little confined.

That dining room with trellis print wallpaper, print rug, and zebra print frame on the mirror? Made my eyes spout blood.

  7. I love the look of many of the new patterns and colors, but I've learned my lesson!

  8. LOL I always love it in pics and then when I get it in my home, I soon tire of it. I keep thinking I just haven't found the right one.
:-) It really does cozy a bedroom up!

  9. I do love wallpaper! I don't think I'll fall though...when we bought our home 10 years ago it was filled with the original wallpapers from the early 60's. I spent the better part of the next two years getting rid of it and painting (my mother thought this was a crime...such quality wallpaper torn out?!?! I told her she should try to live with it!) Anyhow, too much work when I change my mind!
I do love wallpaper though...maybe a tiny bit on one or two accent walls????

  10. I am a decorative painter, so I sort of, kinda, oh heck! I hate wallpaper. I do love the idea and look of it, though.
But, the real reason for the whining is because you can't believe how much of this stuff I have had to chisel off in dime sized pieces and patch the sheetrock (for myself and lots of clients) It won't happen at my house again. Unless, it is a very small area plus, I know how to prep it correctly now, so that it comes off relatively easy.
    Great post.

  11. We made a sacred pact, several years ago, as we were removing wallpaper at the old farmhouse. I had personally primed and prepared, the walls, by the book. The wallpaper refused to leave willingly.

The pact? No more wallpaper, no matter what I see in magazines, etc. J is an exceedingly patient human being, who indulges me in most every decorating idea.....therefore, I promised him and myself, no more wallpaper, that long ago day, when we were peeling stubborn mauve and blue wallpaper, from stubborn walls.

  12. oohh I don't like wallpaper either..It is so much easier to repaint then to deal with that mess lol..if you love a pattern use it in fabric! lol...when I was younger we moved to a place where my parent's bedroom was all gold and silver wallpaper!! It was scary!!

  13. Oh dear, from the examples (overkill) and comments (negative), do I dare admit that I LOVE wallpaper and risk being banished from your Blog forever?

  14. Oh my gosh, This home that I moved into 10 years ago had wallpaper in every room. Brown with chrome daisies in one bathroom, green with chrome palm trees in another, as well as huge life-size terra cotta and navy blue iris silhouettes in the guest bedroom (with matching curtains and bedspread) , and grasscloth in the foyer that made it feel like a cave. It took me years to remove it all...only to have grasscloth make a comeback...not in this house...not in my lifetime! ~ Robyn

  15. That picture of the black and white makes my eyes bleed! I have to admit, after taking every inch of wallpaper out of my home, I started to climb the slippery slope. Just put it in a client's powder room (above wainscotting) and it is stunning. Painted the ceiling one of the colors in the paper and that little jewel box of a room makes me salivate. I might have the will power to stop myself next time but those Thibault papers are sooo pretty and just the Dickens to resist!

  16. Please release me let me go,
To it all I say no.

Paper sticks oh way so tight,
    Never more in my sight.

    Ta-da!

  19. The seduction has begun. I've seen the presence of wallpaper in tv and print ads growing this past year. Seem it has cycled back "in". Be interesting to watch how long it takes the popularity to grow.

  20. I find the problem with wallpaper is that I have to go with solids for fabrics. I have done this behind my bed, where I have a gorgeous map of old Paris, but I can't seem to find anything in a print that complements it.

Maybe we are going towards true texture, not paper?

I do love that red, black and white paper though...

    Best,
    Michelle

  21. I have to say, I've been caught in the snare, but I've loved it all of my design days ... NOT in every room though.

Am I banished from this blog????

  22. * OK, Vicky! As you know, Jim was an Army Officer.. for 38 years! We moved 28 times, all but twice living in gov't quarters. For MOST Army/military wives during MOST of those years, even the THOUGHT of WALLPAPER was just a TURN-ON... like getting a huge diamond or something!

By the time he "retired" from Active Duty (about 6 years ago now), NOBODY had HAD, or wanted, wallpaper for yeeears! (I certainly didn't!!!)~

I'd heard the HORROR STORIES from my civilian friends about REMOVING it too, and I love the more calm, elegant look of NO paper.... (WELLLLLL, EXCEPT for GRASSCLOTH (!!!), which I STILL ADOOORE and am STILL toying w/ having installed in my study here... But other than that, "no way"!!!

BTW, isn't venetian plaster (Oyster colored) "out"? I STILLLL love what we did in the first golf course house we built upon retiring. We had the walls all done that way and oh, were they faaaabulous & so elegantly understated!!! (Lordie, $$$$$ tho!)...

    Love,
    Linda

  23. Carol, I would have thought that you would know better. As for you Brenda, if I did not love you so, you would indeed be banished... Linda, I do think "they " are saying that venetian plaster is out, but who cares, it is so beautiful. Thanks everyone!

  26. LOL...great post and Never....I repeat Never will I have wallpaper again. In both homes I have owned, they had yucky wallpaper that was not put on right. Taking that wallpaper down was the worst house changing chore I have ever had to do and swore ....never would I put that stuff up again....although I do like it. Instead I have had murals painted on our walls. I have never tired of it and it's been 10 years so far. :)

    P.S. Okay...maybe I would put up grasscloth. :)
