Pet Peeve ~ Flying Carpets

So you are asking yourself, whats this crazy decorating fool mean by "Flying Carpets?" I mean rugs that fly right into your face! Carpets that are, or almost are, the focal of a space.
So much of design is ones own personal opinion. But I have never liked the focus to be on the floor . . . why would you want to take someone eyes to the floor when entering a room?

Whenever I come across such a space, I wonder . . . am I the only one that thinks something is off here ? I wonder, because I have never read or heard anyone say that this is a design "No No".

That is until this past week , when I read it!! Rose Tarlow, and I quote, "Use carpets as background only, never as the focus of a room". So tell me , is it just Rose and I ? How do you feel about "Flying Carpets?"

Done ~ Concrete Counters

My son in law finally got the counters done. I took some pictures along the way to share with you. He did a beautiful job. We used three different colors of stain. You apply these in three different spray bottles. Then he put 8 coats of sealer, to give them a smooth touch.
The first step is to build your form, the sink has to be set at this time. Be sure to notice that he braced the area that extends out.

Then he put in the wire.

The mix . . .

Be sure to protect the area all around, this is a messy job. But you pour it in and work it like any other concrete job, to get it smooth . Let it set up and remove the forms. After it dries , you spray with the stain . I will share the whole kitchen later. If you have any questions, just ask away. . .

Orange ~ Is It Really That Bad . . .

It seems everywhere I go in blog world I hear someone talking down the luscious color "Orange".
Recently, I did a color post and ask my readers which hues they liked the least and Orange and Purple came in 1st place, for the most unloved colors . . .

But, is it really that bad? The color of Autumn, fresh , bright but still warm and cozy. I don't know, I guess I will have to stand on the side of "Orange" . . . I find it very welcoming and friendly.

But then again, I live where "Orange Rules". Go Vols!

Design Lesson ~ No Natural Light

When you have a room without a window, you need to create a room with "Mood". Never fight with a space . . . the space will always win.
I suggested that she go with a reddish brown hue and she loved that ideal. The cabinet came from Pier 1, the vessel sink and light fixture were e-bay finds, the towel bar and towel came from Target. She used a faucet meant to be used in a kitchen, but who cares . . . always think outside the box.

The art is a piece from a vacation in Thailand. It is always fun to use pieces with a story behind them. Lace held on to this while riding behind her husband on a motorcycle.
This is a very small room, but it has lots of interest. . . That should always be a goal for any space.

The Art

I believe you can learn interior design, but one must be born with style. Design is a "Art", not a science.
Even the most talented designer will admit that arranging accessories is a trail and error process. One begins by looking for the similarities as well as the contrast among objects.

And we must not forget the all important "Art" of editing . . . when working on a space, remove objects until you can not take one more thing away; letting your room breathe . . .

But in the end, remember ~ Beauty is in the eye of the beholder . . . taste is personal. Period.

Pet Peeve ~ The Line Up

I mean really, I can not even believe this one . . . Who would do this to a very lovely mantel ? I love pottery, but when it is lined up like that, it is just a eye sore. And what about all that open space above the line up . . .

Could they find anything smaller to put on that mantel??? I just don't get it, do you?

Beautiful room, but would you agree that the art is the "only" thing needed above the mantel?

This looks like a great space, but I am almost certain we have a line up on the mantel . . . What's your thoughts on the line up?

A Sweet Obsession

I believe with all my heart that , if you listen, a house will tell you just what it needs . . .
So take time with your home, pay attention . . . Nature does not hurry , yet everything is accomplished.

A designer is a dreamer. He/She thinks about the space as a "living space", one that will forever be evolving.

It is a "Sweet Obsession" . . .

Can anyone tell me who's rooms we are enjoying today?

More Inspiration For Brenda

Mostly, a white soothing dream, but just a touch of green.
Green as a focal . . .

and again . . .

This one just makes me want to trash my own bedroom and start over! I love this room so much, there is only one thing to change, IMHO; I would love to see wood floors in here. So tell me Ms. Brenda, are you feeling any better?
