Wood Floor Trends

I don't know about you, but I am loving the "Old Vintage Wood " floors ! I love the flaws, the cracks, the wider boards ect.

I tried to copy that look in my own home. But somehow the new wood just does'nt have the charm , of the older wood, maybe someday . . .

Not long ago, it seemed that the darker the floors, the better. Black stain floors were all the rage.

But today, I am noticing that the pale colors are making a big come back ! I am seeing them everywhere, lots of painted "white" floors too. For myself, I still like the look of the darker stains . . . how about you, which floors are making you say, "ahhhhhh ?"

  4. The older, and rougher the better for me. I have had the lighter floors but don't like them as well as the darker floors I have now. Ours are dark stained hickory, there are places with pieces of old bullets imbeded in the wood. My hubbie loves that! Come say hi :D

  5. I am a light floor girl , only because I have to have light and bright. I do love the wider planks. A friend of mine has one called french blood that is gorgeous. I could go with the wider plank but I still would opt for lighter. You are right about older wood and its patina. Nothing like it!!I think it looks like satin and I always want to run my hand across it. I am also a tactile girl, kathysue

  6. How coincidental? I am looking a wood flooring right now and trying to decide on a style and color. Although, it has to be engineered hardwood to go over cement, so it limits it a little.
Personally, I like the old floors with all the flaws. However, in my past houses I have had light and cherry stained. I think I prefer the darker color?

    Have a blessed week.

  7. I like dark wood, seems to feel more grounded than lighter wood. But oh my, every speck of dust shows. Thank goodness for swiffers!

  9. We had a local source (WNC) for engineered, reclaimed wormy chestnut-I'm not lying! Too expensive for any entire room, we did a 6x9 foot inlay in our tile foyer. It's the best thing in the house. Just to prove you don't have to give up on character when dealing with a slab-- http://cherylandnorris.blogspot.com/2009/02/foyer-floor-finally-done.html

  10. I have pale, bleached oak floors from the late 80s - I never changed them as they make my northern exposure house so much lighter and airier. When my designer came over in December to do a furniture inventory, she commented how much she likes my floors, how they have made a comeback! And, in my new house, she wants to keep the floors as close the the natural oak color as possible.

It's a good thing that light floors are coming back in style, because they have always been my style!

  11. A flood ruined the blond laminate that was in my condo when I moved in. I always hated it, so it was a blessing in disguise.

I'm putting in wide plank, chocolate hickory. It's not distressed, but I like the look far better than the blond wood, which looked totally unnatural (I lived in pre-war, New England homes before my arrival in Virginia).

Everyone is going for a natural, distressed look right now, but I want sleek and modern.

  12. The first pic is my hearts desire! I love the old floors....to to know who paced those floors...and the reclaimed or repro floors are gorgeous! Yes, this is my hearts desire....:-)

  13. I prefer the darker wood floors, but what I would really love to have is some old pine wide planks. They are just too expensive.

  14. I like the darker woods myself. Hubby is an oak man, so most of the wood in our house is oak. I do have a dark wood floor in my dining room though ~ a mahogany. I love it.

  16. Well I am so awaiting the day to have our hardwoods refinished, this spring hopefully. I even thought about putting carpet down but that only lasted a mere second.

  17. I don't like mine, they look orange ! But the thought of refinishing them does not make me happy.

  18. I'm still loving the dark floors too. I think your new floors look great! I have your typical oak floors in need of refinishing. Would love to have older rustic boards.

  20. Our floors in the family room and halls are old, Vicky, looks like the second picture. They are wide oak wood. I am happy with them but I wish I could make them like the first picture, with more shine....Christine

  21. The floors in our 212 year old home are the original heart pine - they were covered by carpet and asbestos tile when we bought the house 20+ years ago. Hubby refinished every inch - and they're fabulous - love the old stuff.

  22. I love ALL wood floors(except the plain ones in my house!) and think they are such a special component to the feel of the room. That said, depending on the style of the home in the furnishings, I could live with any of these beauties shown. I did hand scraped striped floors for a client. Amazing that she let me and amazing to see...hopefully I get a post of one of these days!

  23. I LOVE vintage wood floors. I don't like black or light. I like the shade in the 1st picture.

PS Your floor is LOVELY :)

  24. I have two favorite things ~~~~ old, dinged, wide-planked, dark wood floors AND tin roofs!

  25. I bet dirt doesn't show up as easily on dark as it does on light. We are actually going to try our hand at making our own floors for our small laundry room-if all goes well then we will be doing the house! (yikes). Natural walnut is our choice..a medium dark. :0)

  26. My husband installed rustic grade mesquite in our home. We filled the worm holes with black sand and epoxy and put a non-glossy Waterlox finish on it. It turned out beautiful, but has been a three year and counting project.

  27. I want light and white in our next home! We have 6" original boards with wax finish. Lovely to look at when just polished...hell to keep looking good!

  28. I have old wide plank floors in to rooms of the house and have really enjoyed them. I am painting the floor in the reading room soon, as I am crazy about white painted floors. The room has little light and needs some brighting up a bit. I won't be atarting this project for awhile yet, but I'm getting excited about it.

  29. I love my old 1927 oak floors. I have read some sarcastic remarks about the old golden oak floors, on some blogs. But I love it and I don't care what others may say. It will come back in style some day and then others will want them again.
Your floors are very beautiful and time will only make them more so.

  30. Whoo Hoo, I am finally caught up on your posts!
Wish I cud say the same about my upgrades which I plan to include planks of a wider version which unfortunately will have to be .... 'engineered' wood (not hard-wood or laminate.)

Like so many others, I LOVE the timeless and worn appearance of vintage h/wood, however like choosing any flooring with a 'hand-scraped' finish; the cost would be far too expensive for the area which has to be done. As I live in Canada where pricing/ labour / taxes are at least twice higher than that of the U.S.; the engineered wider plank flooring in a neutral color and a low sheen finish are options I am choosing to capture the past.

  31. I have never really gravitated to the dark, dark floors - and I know people who have them, and say they show every speck of dirt, every dog hair.

When I first saw my house, 13 years ago, part of what I loved was the light bleached oak floors (I guess they were 'in' when the house was built in the late 80s). On occasion I had the urge to refinish the floors to more of a medium brown, but the effort that would have involved (not to mention the expense) was too much. So, I kept the floors, and now I realize how much they contribute to the light and airy feeling of my north facing house (the back gets northern light). Also, they show no dirt, no dog hair, and the scratches and scrapes that are a result of everyday living barely show on these floors.

When my designer came over to look at my furniture (in preparation for the future house), she commented how much she liked my floors! In the new house, we will probably be a bit more neutral, and try to stay close to the natural oak color of the wood, but overall the feel will be light as well.

A photo of our inset finished (not 6x9 I erred) appears in blog entry of Feb 9 2009 with "foyer floor" in the title. It took a long time to get the 5 inch boards. Had we settled for 3 and 4 it would have been done 6 months earlier. (we have a mix of sizes). It is finished with a clear sealer - pre-sealing photos of installation in progress are back in January.

  33. Crystal, you don't have to be limited to only engineered flooring over concrete. There are installation procedures available today allowing solid wood wide plank floors to go directly over concrete with or without radiant heat. This will pleasantly increase your wood flooring choices.

  34. The 'Old Vintage' wood is a classic in hardwood flooring. Similar to you, I love my old Oak from flooring Sarasota. It gives my house a very intimate feel. I actually matched it with vintage furniture to complete the look. I aimed for that look since I want my house to be reminiscent of the 70's, a decade that I'm exceptionally fond of.
