Painted Kitchen Cabinets

It is no secret that I love painted wood. I love painted floors, furniture and most of all painted cabinets !

This is one of my favorite kitchens, I love the cozy warm feeling of this space. I love the table and chairs , not the most often used, bar and stools. I love the fireplace and the open shelves and I love the painted cabinets.

Loving the worn floors in this space, but you could never pull this off unless you had painted cabinets . . .

This is my own humble kitchen. We did not have painted cabinets when we built our house. We had the very popular stained oak. I can't tell you how scared I was to paint these cabinets . . . but why ? I knew I loved them, mostly, it was that my honey was dead set against it ! Thankfully, he goes on hunting trips . . .

The " Before", need I say more?

  3. I am dying to paint my oak cabinets. What type of paint did you use? Do you have any special tips?

  4. My kitchen cabinets are very similar to the "old look" and I want to paint them this winter. My countertops are white tile and I plan to use a deep red for the cabinets which will match my exterior double doors onto the patio. I am tired of stained cabinets even after I cleaned & waxed them!

  5. I did the same thing! ha. LOVE what you did. A girl after my own heart! My husband left for business and when he came back, we had this hunter green color on our once blonde-wood cabinets. He got sooo squeemish when I talked about painting them. Then one day -- and I had been plotting; selecting colors and etc -- I pulled out the big brushes. He loves them now. It all led to getting new countertops and appliances.

  6. Hi Vicky, Thanks for stopping by today, always good to see you there!!! I love painted cabinets also. You really transformed your kitchen. It looks so warm and inviting, but your whole home does. I painted my 1970s era cabinets in green and even if I were to buy new cabs they would be painted the same!!!
Happy weekend from Rainy Calif. Yes!!! we finally have cold, wet weather, last week it was in the 80s now it feels like Thanksgiving week,Kathysue

  9. Hi,

What a difference a little paint can make. I really like what you did here. I got a kick out of the saying above the door.(-: (I have one above mine too,"Le Chef au Toujour Raison"...the chef is always right.) My kitchen cabinets are a mix of dark stain and paint. I thought of painting them all when I redid it but I always wanted Carara marble counters and the dark wood works best against the light marble...so I settled with painting the island in the center...painting it the color as the walls really opened up the space. The kitchens you posted, including your own, are to die for.(-:

  11. As a decorative artist who also paints cabinets I cannot tell you how many times I've been in someones home where the wife is ready to paint those "golden oak" cabinets and the husband will say, "you can't paint those their oak!"

What a transformation in your kitchen, good for you!

  14. Hello my friend,
I love painted wood cabinets, too. You are so brave to have painted them while he was gone! I am so glad my hubby agreed to having painted white cabinets when it came to renovating our kitchen. It is so bright and such a happy place to be, especially when it smells like freshly baked cookies, fresh bread or like a lovely chicken casserole. A beautiful kitchen makes me want to endeavor to do creative things in it.
I adore the saying that you have, "Never trust a skinny cook". Don't you like to cook?
    Hugs, Cindy

  19. Hello Ms. Vicky. I believe your cabinets are identical to mine and hopefully when mine are painted and the hardware changed out, they'll be as nice as yours are. (I'm so tired of the Oak.) As the majority of mine are pantry style, I've decided not to attempt the task myself and am having them professionally finished so I appreciate 'your' inspiration as I've had three Tradesmen now, tell me not to do it. Men do love their stained wood! :)

  30. My humble kitchen is almost identical to yours. It is painted white by the previous owners, but is beginning to chip. I am trying to decide if I should do some kinda of glaze painting on it. Everything I read says that I need to sand which I dread doing because of all the work. :( Did you have to sand before and are your cabinets chipping at all?
