Have you made your own little garden in a jar yet? Terrariums are so easy to make and easy to care for. I encourage you to give it a try !

The first thing you will need is the container. Then you just layer, starting with an inch of gravel, 1/2 inch of garden charcoal, few inches of potting soil, plants ( be sure they need the same amount of water and sunlight), accessories and water! Could not be any easier!

I am really enjoying the one I made for my family room. I plan to make a few others for gifts . . .

Hey guys, Long time, no see. I just wanted to share some photos I took yesterday. I am really enjoying this Christmas Season. Tate is so much fun at this age. He loves to say " HO HO HO "and is train crazy. . . We are wearing out " The Polar Express".

I am also loving my Standard Poodle!!! Let me let you in on a well kept secret. . . there is no better breed of dog ! She is the best dog in the world, so much fun! Carley is so smart and loving, I can't say enough good things about her. I will never have any other breed.

I hope everyone has a Wonderful Christmas. I miss talking with you, but I have moved on to other things. My disembarkment Syndrome illness is so much better ! I still have it, but due to all the dog walking ect. I am much better. Thanks to all of you that continue to check up on me. I love you guys!

Belgium Style

For the most part I think images like this one is what most of us think of when we think of " Belgium Style". The lack of color, things that look old and used, yet so beautifully put together.

I prefer a Belgium influence to the real thing . . . I love to celebrate the less than perfect, but I also need a bit of color.

To me the Belgium look is a look of simplicity. . . it speaks quietly and like a person of few words, will always get your attention.

Sometimes just a hint is all that's needed. It's knowing when to say , "stop". A room not afraid to have a bit less, knowing all the while, it will always be more. . .

Old Book Collections

Recently I got a new design book with the most beautiful bookcases, filled with old leather book collections. The books were old and worn, the colors were perfect. They were works of art, and they were awesome . I looked at my own bookcase in my family room and thought about creating a similar look for myself. But what does one do with their "real " books? I love my books and look at them often. I know the books in this photo were very much planned and placed . . . this did not just happen.

I love the look of the old worn leather books and I do use them . I placed two in my foyer to add a bit of height to my plate holder. But would I enjoy a whole bookcase of non-functional books . . . I wonder.

I put two antique books in my guest room. I think they add lots of soul to the space. But no one is going to look at them, not inside anyway.

Notice that I brought the color black from the old box down to the middle shelf with the two black books. But in the lowest shelf are books that I read and look at over and over, getting ideals for clients ect. So I am not sure I would want to make art out of my bookcase regradless of how lovely it looked.

When using books to add height and interest, I do think about color and size and most of the time I remove the covers as well. What are your thoughts on the old antique books? Would you enjoy a bookcase turned to art? Great to look at , but non-functional . . . I would love to know.

My Antique French Chair

Remember this beautiful photo of my niece in my old chair. I just knew this would be a great photo and was so glad I had the groom's men take it outside and place it in the pasture field. After the wedding I took out my newly purchased "natural linen " to take it to the upholstery . . . but somehow it just did not feel like the right thing to do.

So I went on the hunt for a different fabric, one as close to the original as I could find. This is what I came up with, not silk, but the same color and feel as the old fabric. Everyone except Vanna that I talked to about covering my chair thought natural linen was the way to go and maybe it would have been. But somehow I always swim upstream if the rest are going down . . .

This is the BEFORE , it was so dirty and worn. I could have learned to love the worn, but not the dirty. So what do you think? I really love it all fresh and clean without looking like a completely different chair. Always follow your heart when it comes to your own castle.

You know how one post can sometimes lead to another . . . well this is one of those post. My last post showed a large sofa at the end of a bed, it became the focal of the space rather than the bed it's self. Some commented that they liked the sofa, just not at the end of the bed. That got me thinking . . . I thought about using a chest at the end of my own bed for a time, but I did not. How do you like a chest at the end?

This is a show room, but I have seen stools at the end of beds . . . is this more to your liking?

I tried to buy one of these for my guest room, but it was already SOLD . . . now I am glad I did not get it. I feel it would have messed with the flow of the space.

How about some extra storage at the end ? Soft enough for sitting . . .

This is what I ended up with at the end of my bed . Yes, a dog bed. I don't think I will be changing it anytime soon. So how about you guys, do you have anything at the end?

Backyard Wedding

Yesterday we had a small family backyard wedding for my niece . The weather could not have been any prettier, a frog sang the whole entire time and everyone loved it. Only about 40 of the couples closest friends and family attended , so it was extra special.

I did all the tables with a vintage look, the flowers were in mason jars, with jute string. The groom wrote the bride little love notes that were added to each one. Oh how she loved visiting each table and reading her notes . . . she cried.

The bride's sister and cousins stood with her and the groom , all his best buds. The boys had a blast . . . they found our tucked away bar and had a private party a bit early. I will not say anymore about that . . .

The cake table, we had 3 cakes each more special than the last, so beautiful, but when they were brought out I had no time for photos. We had them on the wooden boxes at different levels, a chocolate with curls, strawberry with white chocolate dipped berries and a coconut with the cake topper. We have a cake artist in this town . . . I regret not taking time for a photo. You would have loved it. Maybe I will get to share the "real" pictures soon .

The trick to using bold color in a space is to use lots of it. Each color has to balance out the other. So if you are thinking about some bold color for your own castle , be ready to commit. This is not an area to dip your toe . . . You have to be willing to dive !

If you find yourself in Abilene, TX in need of a place to stay, be sure to check out "The Sayles Ranch Guesthouse" owned by Terry and Laura Browder. The Browder's buy free standing homes and after Terry works his magic, they rent them out. A Texas style B&B . . . This one was named "Cotton Eyed Joe", I love that table and the clever way Terry hides the flat screen , the walls, the raised ceiling ect. But the star of the home for me, has to be the floors !

I love Terry's approach to design . . . " I am not in to just buying stuff off a showroom floor and most of the stuff I use is either antique or just plain junk. I wouldn't know Lee Jofa from Lee Harvey Oswald . . . often the deciding factor in how a room , or even how a house comes together is determined by what I find."

He claims that his work is very much like Forrest Gump . . . " it's like a box of chocolate, you never know what you are going to get." I bet no one thought they would get walls lined in old book covers. No, I bet they did not, but then they did not know Mr. Browder !

Terry claims that decorating is just solving challenges until you get it right. None of it is very sophisticated, but it causes one to stretch their mind and come up with creative solutions.

Cottage Style

One of my little nieces is getting married this spring and is starting to put together things for her first home. She loves the Cottage Style and I can't wait to help her put her treasures together. There is nothing anymore fun for me . . .

This style offers more decorating options than any other style. No wonder it has been called an American favorite.

It is certainly one of my favorite styles. With few rules of right or wrong. Easy living for families with children and pets. Mixing and matching is always accepted with ease.

I love the trend to paint everything white . . . could not be any easier than that. How do you like the Cottage Style?

Design Lesson ~ Large Spaces

When designing a large space it is so easy to become overwhelmed. A solution for this is lots of color and pattern, the space will quickly become more intimate and cozy. Another tip is to be sure you have enough furniture in the space. Often creating smaller areas within the space is very helpful as well. In this bedroom the solid white duvet offers a peaceful place to rest the eye and the mind,becoming a very important element in the space.

"My" Top Ten Design Elements #9

Texture, primitive, "The Something to Talk About" has to included in my list of "Elements " for great design. Without these your room can easily become boring . You can have a nice room without them, but for a great room, try to include one of the three. It will make all the difference.

The huge stove hood in this kitchen gives it the "Something to Talk About". It makes the whole space. I bet everyone that comes in walks right over to it and starts to ask questions. These are the elements that make for great design.

Without the texture of the walls, that primitive coffee table and those fabulous French doors hiding the T.V. what would this room be . . .

No one that walks into this space will ever forget it.

This photo shows that it does not have to be a grand thing, sometimes leaving the worn , needs to be re-done . . . can be the very "Element" that makes the room dance . . .

I have a down -filled pillow at the end of our bed for one of my pooches. They also have two beds in the man cave , where they can lay in the sun. I love the texture of this doggy bed.

This adobe would be great for a dog that loves to be where the action is . . . out of the way, close to the door and my guess is, in the kitchen.

Doesn't get any sweeter than this, "Jackson", or his bed. I may get my son -in- law to make one of these. I once seen one made with a upside down table, so cute . . . I wish I had that photo to share.

This dog has his own "Man Cave", so fitting for the mud room and the dog matches the decor in color and breed. Loving his art . . .

This is where I found my other pooch this morning . . . she did this herself with no help. LOL Yes, she is always in our bed, sometimes we have them both . . . I would not have it any other way. I don't mind a bit if I smell like "puppy love".

"My" Top Ten Design Elements # 8

# 8 in my series of "Top Ten Design Elements" is the " Art" in the space. I just told a client this morning that , " Art is personal, and if she likes it and the scale is right, it works!" She sent me a photo of a picture she saw that she thought might work in the room we are currently working on. However, the scale was not right . . . Take a look at this photo. The scale of the painting is a bit small for the sofa, but the molding of the stairs makes this tricky. The solution was to pick art with strong, bold colors ! The colors in this piece adds to it's scale. That's why it works.

The art in this photos follows along with the feel of the space. Notice that the chair is also a "piece of art". The two work together beautifully.

Art can be fun and create the " Something to talk about", for the room. Children's drawing are great for this, plus it adds such a sense of pride for the child to see his or her drawing framed and on the wall.

Remember that anything can be used as art . We too often limit ourselves to mirrors and pictures . . . think outside the box from time to time.

Watercolors are light and work best with something light beneath them. This is a perfect combo. So take a look at the art around your castle. Do you see room for improvement ? Starting a art collection is a fun thing for couples to do together. Art never goes out of style ! More than anything else it tells others what you are interested in. Art speaks loudly with out any words !

A favorite blogger of mine, Susan at "Love Where You Live"http://thegreenplum.blogspot.com/ is doing a series called "What's in and What's out. I was honored that she asked me to play . . . My prediction is that we will soon move away from the all white and grey rooms. Yes, now that everyone has painted their walls grey and everything else from the floors to the dishes is white, I except to see more color.

Do I know this for sure, of course not ! I don't know a lot for sure, but the one thing I do know is that change will come. We tire of the same look and everyone strives to be different. So I assume that color will soon be added to all these grey and white rooms . . . very soon.

So far, this year, this is my favorite room ! When I saw it, my heart skipped a beat. Why ? Because it was different. Has pink and cream been done before, of course it has. But I had not seen it for a very long time. So tell me, What do you predict ? I would love to know . . .

I wanted to wish you all a "Merry Christmas". I hope each of you get what you want . . . time with love ones , good food and laughter. This is the card that we made of Tate. He is making this Christmas extra special.

This is what I got . . . A new concrete top, and sink for my old "vintage " vanity . lol I must truly be French. I never tear anything out, just re-make it. I painted the once stained wood.

I used the same color as the walls, just in a gloss. This is my "go to color", if in doubt . I always use this color from ICI Dulux paints in "Sisal." I have used it time and time again and find it goes with anything.

Notice that I used a grain scoop for my candle holder. I always try to use something old and loved the patina of this piece.

This is the before, taken a few years ago. I changed the accessories awhile back, but continued to be stuck with the 80's mauve sink and counter. I am loving the change. So tell me , did your house get any Christmas gifts this year?

Show and Tell

1st the show : I wanted to show you guys my early Christmas Present . . . I have looked for a long , long , time, for a new Chandy for my dining room. I even had others looking for me . . . when I found one I liked, I did not want to pay what it cost . . . I found it very difficult to get both the design and price I wanted. I finally decided on this one from Ballards Design. I really like it for the space because it is big , but doesn't take away from the mural . How did I do?

Now for the "Tell" part of this post. I have a "Pet Peeve" about this subject and I have to ask so please do tell me . . . " Have you ever "sketched a design on a napkin?" I hear this all the time, I read it all the time. But for the life of me I can not get myself to believe it ! I have never gone to a design meeting without a pad of paper. I have never sat in on a meeting, that there was not a pad of available paper close at hand. So I have to ask . . . Have you ever ?

Lace asked me to take a few photos of my favorite subject in hopes of making a great "Christmas" card . This was the winning shot ! Such pure, unfiltered JOY.

BUT this one was pretty cute too . . . it was not easy to pick the best shot.

And just so you don't think I only take photos of Tate . . . a friend asked me to take a few shots of her favorite guys. I would love to have taken this little angel home. . .

I found that older children are not as easy as the babies. This young man was like... "enough already". My tip , for getting a great shot . . . TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES !

"My" Top Ten Design Elements #7

I want to remind everyone that this is "MY' personal list . . . I do not want to imply that this should be every one's taste and desire for their own space. For me , window treatments should always be SIMPLE . So # 7 on my list is " Simple Window Treatments".

That does not mean simple panels only ! I love these wooden shutters. I love the color ,the texture, that they make a huge impact on the space and I love that they are simple! This space is perfect in every way, for my personal taste.

Sometimes, wooden blinds are the way to go. This is a child's room, the blinds do not fight with the bed , they let the bed be the focal. They are up and out of the way , perfect for a active child at play.

Love the simple window treatments here, not taking away from the great window. Just a little something, but perfectly in the background.

But I also like a little personality. This is simply Perfect . So tell me , what do you like on your windows?

Painted Kitchen Cabinets

It is no secret that I love painted wood. I love painted floors, furniture and most of all painted cabinets !

This is one of my favorite kitchens, I love the cozy warm feeling of this space. I love the table and chairs , not the most often used, bar and stools. I love the fireplace and the open shelves and I love the painted cabinets.

Loving the worn floors in this space, but you could never pull this off unless you had painted cabinets . . .

This is my own humble kitchen. We did not have painted cabinets when we built our house. We had the very popular stained oak. I can't tell you how scared I was to paint these cabinets . . . but why ? I knew I loved them, mostly, it was that my honey was dead set against it ! Thankfully, he goes on hunting trips . . .

The " Before", need I say more?

"My" Top Ten Design Elements # 6

# 6 The "Interior" should relate to the "Exterior" when you design a space. This is my view from my Dining Room and Family Room . . . I live in the country, so a modern space would not feel right in my home, nor would a "Beachy Feel" My home calls for a "Country Feel".

I picked a green , grassy color for my living room walls, used stone from our land for the fireplace ect. But it is not a " Theme " room ! So often I find that when one feels that their home calls for "Country," it must be filled with roosters. I don't have a single rooster in my home.

The artist that did our mural used our land as inspiration. I don't think I will ever paint over it. It has the spirit of our lives just wrapped around us, like a warm hug.

The"Country Feel"continues from room to room. This is our guest room, the art came from my own garden. Make your home personal. Tell your guest who you are .

Our master bedroom, again the art has that "Country Feel", imagine this same space with a painting of the ocean. I love the ocean, but it would not suit this room , in this house, on this piece of land. . . I know some would say that part of the joy of decorating is that, if you want to live at the beach and you don't, you can just bring the beach to you, with your decor. I disagree, but that is my humble opinion. What are your thoughts . . . Does your decor relate to your own surrounding?

Design Lesson ~ Diagonal

Diagonal : Connecting two non-angles.

Whenever you want to make a space look larger, consider a diagonal design on the floor. This one simple trick will make all the difference.

When using two very different colors, it will add a lot of drama as well. A black and white combo will always be a classic.

You can do this with paint or a rug. Don't limit yourself to tile . . . Notice the window , a lot of thought went into this simple space.

There is a lot going on in this kitchen, they needed the diagonal floor, but knew to keep the color with a low contrast.

I love this bathroom, though I don't think the tub would be all that comfortable. However, I would give up comfort, for all that charm.

I have a diagonal floor in my small kitchen with a diagonal back splash. Where have you applied the trick of " Diagonal" in your castle?

One of the things that I personally love in a room is a mix of finishes . . . I try to make sure that at least one painted piece is included. I prefer this piece to be a bit worn. It can be a "New" piece, but I want it to look old.

These worn painted pieces just make a room feel like you can relax and put your feet up . . . and if it is the coffee table, you can! You don't have to be so careful, they just make living easy.

I also think your accessories look better on a painted background. They can add the punch of color that may be lacking as well.

I know that you have all heard that every room needs a touch of black . . . that just may be true!

In my own castle, I have at least one painted piece in every room , except my Living Room, however, my dining room and foyer are almost part of that room , only a wooden rail separates the spaces, and I have painted pieces in both the foyer and the dining room. So tell me, how do you feel about "Painted Pieces"?

Photography Class "Homework"

You guys asked for info on my class, so here are a few tips . . . always have your subject looking in the same direction. This is my Mom and her dog, Owen. I told mom to follow Owen, this is easier than trying to give a dog directions.

Be aware of the background and where the sun is hitting. I also find if the person is not looking at you, they seem to be more relaxed.

Here I was "Stopping the Action", you can do this by changing the "Shutter Speed," but I did it by Changing the setting of my camera to the "guy running". If the subject is not going any faster than a man can run, this setting will work fine.

Now, does this look like a "Great Grandmother" ?

Don't you just love people that take chances? The rare few that color outside the lines, dance to a different tune. How many of you would have the guts to do this black wall? I know I wouldn't and yet, I love it.

Check out all the different fabric and colors here . Fun, fun , fun and then they go all serious and hang that artwork.

I would never hang that light fixture, I don't even think it goes, but is sure is cool. I would say this designer is "Gutsy". When you take a few chances, it makes for a room that people will remember and talk about.

Would you consider doing a dining room like this? Do you like it?

When taking chances and being gutsy, accessories are the safest way to go. They are easy to change and don't require a big commitment. Are you "Gutsy"? I don't think I am, but I do admire those that are . . . Take a look around your castle, where have you been " Gutsy"? I would love to hear about it.

Pet Peeve ~ Theme Decor

I am always just a bit afraid whenever I do a "Pet Peeve" post. Seems like I always step on someone's toes, plus it's hard to find photos to use that are not personal . I guess this one is personal to Sandra Lee . . . but with all her success and her sweet spirit, I am going to chance it. Whenever I watch "Semi-Homemade", I can not see pass all the themes for every show. I see so many friends and family members that use themes as well, it is ,as if , they pick a subject and then add everything they can find, of that one object. I don't think it is very interesting or creative. How do you feel about " Theme Decor"?

#4 Books * I want you to remember that this is my personal list . . . To each his own, but for me, a space is not complete without a few books.

Or even a lot of books. I love how the sofa is against the bookcase , and then the art adds the pop. This is a interesting space, one that will not be forgotten.

You would be surprised at all the places one can add bookshelves. In a small home, they are much needed and add so much charm.

Do you have a " box" of a room , lacking a focal point? This bookcase with the added curtain , is providing the "wow " factor for this space.

I love this look too. Just pile them on a coffee table . . . you can tell a lot about a person by the books they collect. I always notice what others are reading. Are you a book worm too? Where do you keep them? Are they in every room? Inquiring minds want to know . . .

Has anyone noticed that I have a new rug in my Living Room? Notice anything odd about it? Yes, it has a lot of blue, but that is not it . . .

This is a "FREE" hand me down from a friend, not what I would have chosen, but I think it works. On the "back" side! Yes, I wanted it to be more muted so I am using it on the back side.

Here is a close up of the "front " side . . .

And here is the more muted, worn, almost needle point looking "back" side. Which do you like better? Don't be afraid to think outside the box. When you see something at a good price, or in this case a GREAT price . . . think before you pass it by, could it work used in a different way?

#2 : Element of Surprise * When a space has a "Element of Surprise", there will always be something of interest in the room . . . something to talk about! For my very simple 80's house to have a copper vessel sink, on a concrete top, is always surprising to everyone that enters. They always come out of the bathroom with something to say about it.

But your element of surprise does not have to be a "show stopper", an antique high chair used as a night stand can work as well.

In my family room, it's the art . . . to have a self Portrait on the wall is always a surprise. I also get alot of comments on the painting that my husband did for me on my 16th birthday. Yes, all "Elements of Surprise".

In my guest room, it's the stairs used as a nightstand with the photo of my grandparents, that's her wedding ring and watch too. Something to talk about, people want it, so give it to them.

I know this will come as a surprise to all of my loyal followers . . . I am always so careful not to show the line of deer heads that tower over my living room. There's 5 of them, and I fought hard NOT have this little surprise in my home, but lost that fight . I am so glad that they are not as taboo as they once were. I admit I have gotten used to them and they don't even bother me anymore. Always a topic of conversation, and to see the big smile on my honey's face . . . priceless ! So tell me, what are you surprising your guest with?

If you have not been to "Cote de' Texas" http://cotedetexas.blogspot.com/ in the last day or so, go by soon and check out her newest post, " Top Ten Design Elements", it is fabulous ! I know to copy Joni's post is blogger's suicide, but I am doing it anyway and hoping others will join me . . . how much fun would it be to see every one's personal list of top ten design elements. How many of us would compile the same list? I would be interested in finding out.

#1 on my list would have to be the "Bones of a Space". I think , though not impossible, it's hard to have a great space without "good bones". How much interest can a white box have, really? I know that these things really make ones budget go way up, but remember you can add things slowly. You don't have to start with everything the day you move into a house. Layer as you can afford, change is always exciting, at least to me.

Without the wood and the painted brick, what would this space be? Just would not have the same charm, would it?

Elements like built-in bookshelves add so much to a room. Think about you own castle, look around, what could you add?

Rarely do I just go buy a accessory for my home. I much more prefer to make my own. I am not crafty, I just simply put a few things together. Here I added pine cones from the yard to a glass container, then tied a ribbon around it.

I put this basket together for my coffee table in the living room . . .

and this for my den.

I placed a few thing on my Italian Florentine tray for the dining room table. I think it is much more interesting to "Make Your Own".

So get started . . . Fall is coming, I promise.

Adding to my Art Collection

I believe "Art" should be very personal. It should make your heart sing , grab you as soon as you see it and haunt you if you pass by and don't bring it home. That was just the case with this painting. I first saw it months ago, kept it on my mind, continue to go back to see if it had been marked down . . .

Last week I finally brought it home ! It is 70 years old, from Belgium. I love the style and the subject suits my home here on the farm. I could not wait to get it hung, and did so without any help from my sweetie . . . who by the way has yet to notice it! I don't know why I am surprised by that. I once asked him how he liked the new chair? He looked at a chair that had been there for 15 years and said, " it looks great" . . .

Photography Class Photos, pt. 2

After a couple of hours "Downtown "we were told to go to an old "Homestead" in town for the 2nd part of the field trip.

Leah and Millie went home. So I could not cheat here . . .

However, I managed to find another model.

We meet tomorrow to compare our photos. I can't wait to see what the others got. I took my photos to get them printed today. I had them on a USB stick. I had never printed from one of those and asked the girl at the counter to help me . When my photos came up she said, "You can't print professional photos without a copyright ." I could not believe it!

Today we had our first class field trip . . . the instructor told us to go "downtown " and shoot whatever we could find there.

Christopher Coffin's interiors are worldly. He keeps his focus on classic design staying far away from trends and faddish design. I just love the layering he has achieved in this space. It almost tells a story.

This space looks so peaceful, I love the soft grays and taupes used here.

His rooms are full of personality, they have a world traveled feel with just a hint of a contemporary flair.

He strives to create environments that will continue to be as special years from now as they are today.

Just a few Changes for the Humble Bathroom

My 80's bathroom is not something to write home about. There is not much that can be done with the humble space, accessories are about it . . . Last year I added a copper vessel sink on a concrete counter, re-stained the vanity and added some texture to the walls. I did these things right before entering a makeover contest that a fellow blogger was hosting. I did not win, nor did I really like the accessories that I got. So I recently went on the hunt for some new "eye candy" for the space.

A new picture I picked up at a local consignment shop.

Here is how it looked when I entered the contest. Not really my style, no wonder I did not win. I left all this stuff at the same consignment shop . . . do you think it will sell? lol

A close up of my counter, I really love it. I plan to do the master bath's too, but I am going to leave it unstained with a white sink. I have already told my honey that's what I want for Christmas, he so wishes, that I liked jewlery . . .

Happy Birthday to "ME"

Today is my B-Day, and this stone wall was my present from my husband and son in law. Do I have the best guys or what? They did it in one day! I just love it!!!!!

I love how you move from the stone to the cedar railing that surrounds my sunken living room.

I already had a stone floor, so the stone wall was calling my name . . . haunting me . . .

This is what I had before, I never did like it, but my honey put it in without consulting me when we were building the house. So much better now , would you agree?

And on another note, Look what Ms Brenda sent for my little guy! She made this Monkey with her own two hands! Tate just loves it. She put his name on the tail, so cute. At my age one does not get many surprises and this was so sweet. Thank you Brenda, you're the best!

I don't know about where you live, but around here the Hydrangeas have been amazing this year . . .

I have had lots to cut and enjoy in my home for at least a month and lovin every minute of it.

But they are fading now and soon will be gone. I will miss them . . .

Summer Time Bedroom ~ Update

I have made a few changes in my Master Bedroom and thought I would share . . . The big chance of course is the wood floors! But I also changed the drapes and some of the bedding. I am not a "Bedding in the bag" kind of gal so some of it stayed the same. I kept my lamps, but changed the shades , making a huge difference, but one that doesn't show because of the sunlight coming into the space.

I love cotton bedding , but it does wrinkle . . .

In any room I do, I try to add a "Element of Surprise", for this room , my antique high chair is serving as a night stand. I thought about styling this for you guys, but thought I would show it as it really is . . . I am always reading something, I have to have a clock and a picture of Tate near by .

The " Before", can you see what a few changes can do? I may go back to this darker look in the fall and winter . . . I love to change things with the seasons. Have a great weekend!

Family Room ~ Update

I have been making a few changes here and there in my house. It is amazing what just a few minor changes can do to update a space. This is my very tiny family room, it has a large window behind the sofa, which I love , but it makes the lighting almost impossible for a good photo of the space. The floor was the biggest change! Have I said how much I am lovin my wood floors lately? I will never have wall to wall carpet again. I took the rug from my living room and replaced it with a larger one , this one works great for this space, another good reason to keep your colors flowing from one room to another in a home . . . I also got a new rocker for my little man, new lamp, an antique chest replaces the coffee table and I brought home a painting from a trip to Hong Kong.

I wanted to show some of the detail on the chest, it is midnight blue which goes great with flowers from my garden. That's " Cliffie's" place on the sofa and he moves for no one!!!

Sadly, the "Before ". . . I hate to even show it ! What changes have you made to your castle lately?

A Small Family Wedding

Yesterday my niece got married. We had a beautiful, fun , day in the sun, filled with laughter and smiles. We made memories that will last forever.

Could not have asked for a more perfect day . . .

Spring in My Garden

For those of you that have not heard, my computer somehow lost all my blogging pictures ! I just don't have the heart to start over . . . so I am going to sign off for awhile. I want to thank all my faithful followers, I have enjoying getting to know you so much. Blogging was something that I never thought I would ever do, but to my surprise , I found that I liked it very much.

I am in the process of doing some updating in my house, the stone wall in the foyer, a few things in the master bedroom and the family room. I am sure I will want to share these projects when I am done, so I will be around from time to time. I will also want to show up dated photos of my little tater bug . . . so bear with me. I have started a new file, and when I get enough images to continue, I may post again from time to time.

Meet Ms. Millie

This is Ms. Millie, she is my daughter Leah's dog. Millie is a 5 year old ,ten pound, Russian Tsvetnya Bolonka, she came from a S.C. Rescue. She is the best little thing, housebroke, crate trained, purse trained . . . I wanted to do this post to remind everyone that the dogs needing homes through rescue programs are great dogs . Leah got her on Sat. and she has been perfect. We found her on Pet Finders. These dogs are not free! But when you consider that all the puppy work has already been done, all medical has been taken care of, it is a great deal !

Seek Balance

Scale, balance and rhythm are a designers best friend. Without these basic guidelines a space just will not be pleasing. Do the rest of you think this settee is a bit small for it's surroundings, or is it just me?

Creating symmetry with similar yet different objects will make a more interesting decor. Notice the silver mirror balances the silver candle sticks on the other side. The two pieces on each side of the sink are very close to the same size ect.

Move the eye around the room with color. Here we go from the chair to the drape, to the pillows , the flowers and then back to the other chair .

Look around your own castle, is one of these elements off anywhere? Check again . . . What's calling your name?
