I get more and more concerned every time I do a "Pet Peeve" post. I have a fear of putting up someones personal pictures and hurting their feelings or making them mad. But my blog has always been about learning the do's and don't and I think the "Peeve " post do that best. It is one thing to hear something and another to see it. Just remember that this is my blog and therefore MY opinions only. Now that being said, would you agree that the rug in this image is a bit small?
This is a image from a showroom, I guess he wanted to show as much of his line as possible, but that little runner of a rug, just ruined it for me.
With all the pattern in this space, no rug would have worked better IMHO. But at least a larger one in a solid color please . . .
I have to wonder what one is thinking when they put small rugs in places there should not be a rug at all . I love everything about this image, but the rug . . .
And you just know that these two beauties are sliding around everywhere . . . why? So tell me, have I stepped on a few toes? How do you guys feel about the "Too Small Rug"?
I am not generally a fan of small rugs, for two simple reasons...I find them to be a distraction as well as hazardous!
ReplyDeleteI love your "Pet Peeve" posts - always great food for thought - I'm checking out my rug sizes right now :-)An example of the "perfect" would be a helpful addition for all of those (me) struggling DIY decorators, secretly hoping their home isn't one of the "Peeve" examples.

ReplyDeleteI feel small rugs/mats can find a place in the grand scheme of decor however their placement is vital to be totally functional. (ie: Entry ways, bedside etc.) From the images you have shown, I feel they have been used only for aesthetics. -Brenda-

ReplyDeleteFor the most part, I don't have a problem with small rugs, especially as depicted in the first and third photos. Sometimes, a larger rug just doesn't work -- for me. It kinda swallows up the area. And, particularly, since I often like to see a little wood but with some softness. With that said, I don't care for small rugs that slip and slide. ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree! I recently convinced my neighbor not to put a small rug in front of her fireplace instead of the appropriate size to center the room. Phew! My toes are in tact.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the "too small rug". I'd rather there be no rug than one that is too small. Some of these pictures could be much better if they just had a better sized rug in them.
ReplyDeleteIt is one of my pet peeves also. In fact, it bothers me so much to see small rugs. I would rather see no rug, than a postage stamp of a rug ruining the whole space. Can you tell I feel strongly about it? haha.

I couldn't agree with you more!! If you can't afford one big enough then don't buy one at all. I say this because many people i've had this conversation with are much more willing to shell out $100 possibly $200 for a rug but nothing more. It really can ruin a space!

I agree with you 1,000% ... something about a small rug in a large space is off-putting. Looks like the decorator is trying to cover up some kind of defect.
ReplyDeleteI so agree with you. There is nothing more distracting and ruins a design than a too small rug. You can't focus on anything else, but the scale issue. Here's my "motto". Don't post (pics) anything that you don't expect to be criticized on. You are not doing anything to intentionally hurt anyone. By the way, my husband tells me that I apparently skipped the tact line when I was being created.

ReplyDeleteI don't care for the too small rugs either. I have a feeling though that my living room rug fits into that catagory. Perhaps I will just take it out and look for a larger jute or seagrass rug. That's what I really want for that space. Thanks for the reminder that nothing on the floor looks better than a too small rug.

I agree, I always equate it with a postage stamp in the middle of the room. I do love those two black and white checked sofas in the first picture. I had to laugh at your comment on my Easter Hint post. You need to dye eggs for your precious new little man. It really is pretty fun!! Try it you might like it. I suggest green eggs for you!! ReplyDeleteThat last image is funny, I feel like they're trying to swim towards each other. I think I have seen a few images where small rugs work (though come to think of it, I can't remember any right now)...but since I've been looking at design blogs I've realised it is larger rugs that often make things work. Before, I sensed it but I didn't know why. I'm glad I know now!
ReplyDeleteI love the second photo. My eye first goes right to the "to small" rug/runner. But I hate shopping for rugs! Anyone else feel that way? I agree 100% with you Vicky that no rug is better than too small of one. Pet Peeves are fun!!
ReplyDeleteI'm a novice. And, although I don't have any of the small rug scenarios you posted above, I wouldn't be offended by your post even if I did. How else do novices learn? That's not to say we can't learn from the example of a beautiful room. But, we often learn more quickly from our errors. I liked the post.
ReplyDeleteAnnoying!!!! Go naked but don't go too small. I find all these images ironic because it meant someone, in desperate need of an eye exam, thought these looked great to shoot images of.
ReplyDeleteAlicia, You hit the nail on the head! When I do a post like this, I only use images from magazines ect. And most of the time those images have it right, but everyone once in a while I find one to show you guys. I collect them until I get enough to do a post.

ReplyDeleteYes...just went thru this problem. Purchased a natural chunky fiber rug from Pottery Barn 5x8 and removed it to another area because the eye was uncomfortable. The 8x10 now is wonderful for the space. I do have a wonderful small 1840 rug right at the back entry that works great. Timely post.

As for me, I also like bigger rugs more than smaller rugs. It greatly brings out the beauty in a room. We have big rugs in our home. Although it's really hard for me to clean it by myself, so I always call for some help from them to clean my carpet. Grand rapids also have elegant and affordable rugs that will suit your personality.
