Seek Balance

Scale, balance and rhythm are a designers best friend. Without these basic guidelines a space just will not be pleasing. Do the rest of you think this settee is a bit small for it's surroundings, or is it just me?

Creating symmetry with similar yet different objects will make a more interesting decor. Notice the silver mirror balances the silver candle sticks on the other side. The two pieces on each side of the sink are very close to the same size ect.

Move the eye around the room with color. Here we go from the chair to the drape, to the pillows , the flowers and then back to the other chair .

Look around your own castle, is one of these elements off anywhere? Check again . . . What's calling your name?

  1. I woke this morning to a very upsetting thing... all of my photo in my blogging folder, that I have collected for such a long time are GONE! I don't know if I will continue blogging, as I don't have alot of time anyway and without my collection of images the time will be so much longer. Just wanted to let you guys know.

  2. what?? what happened to your photos? I know that is SO distressing. I hope you can reclaim them. My laptop caught a bug at the first of the year, and I was so afraid I had lost mine, too. Best wishes on getting yours back...

  3. Yes, I think the settee is too small. I'm also not wild about the duplicate pairs, the sconces on each side of the painting and then the pair of statues on the floor. They seem to cancel one another out. Great post!

So sorry to hear about losing your images....I hope it's just a glitch and they magically appear! Have a blessed Sunday!

  4. Oh...the first picture makes me cringe. It looks like a TV ad for a 'before' photo of 'What Not To Do'. Uninteresting, too symetrical, over bearing pieces that, on their own, would probably do well, but not mixed.
I especially love the kitchen and covet the chairs in the dining room.
Sorry about your pics...hope you find them or the 'will' to continue. I really enjoy your challenges. Makes my artist eye think...and that's always a good thing!

  5. I think the settee in the first picture is the perfect size..I think it is everything else that is too big and too many!!!!!
I really hope you find your file again but even if you don't PLEASE don't stop blogging I look forward to my regular visits even if I don't alway comment! xo

  6. Oh no! I hope you can recover your pictures. That must be a terrible feeling. Your blog would be missed if you stopped! You are one of my favorites.

I totally agree about the settee. It doesn't look right surrounded by all of those large scale items.

  8. OH!NO!! for two reasons. One that you lost your photos and two that you might not blog anymore. I will miss you , please don't go!! I think you truly add something to blog world. I know if it is not fun for you anymore you might need a break but you truly will be missed. I will keep my fingers crossed that you change your mind. hugs Kathysue

  9. Sorry you lost your pictures. It appears it is time to call Geek Squard ... they might be able to locate them for you.

I really like the first picture. I think it all depends on what a person is trying to emphasize. If the precept is to emphasize the picture ... then it worked. The red sconces could be a little smaller but they are needed to bring in the red on the settee and the statues are needed to balance out the black in the picture. I most likely would not have used those particular items but they are definitely needed to bring color balance to the space.

  10. Absolutely love the last picture but would do away with the BIG FURNITURE ON THE RIGHT SIDE .. it doesn't balance out the wall on the left (it over shadows it). Or perhaps another piece of furniture on the left should be used.

  13. I agree that the settee is too small and is overwhelmed by the painting. BTW, please don't stop blogging! I love your blog! What the heck happened to your photos? Kind of scary to think you lost all your inventory. I hope you get them back. --Delores

  14. These are great. Awesome points. I agree on the settee. It feels too small. You are so right on image 2.

  16. I don't like the two things at the side of the settee and it does need to be a big longer and bigger. Come say hi :D

  17. Oh goodness, I wonder what happened that you lost all of your images. I hope they reappear as fast as they disappeared. You would be greatly missed in blogland.

I like the settee but I would have a much smaller picture over it. And I love the armless sofa with all the colored pillows, that one so reminds me of "moi".

  21. First of all, please don't stop blogging. I look so forward to all your posts. I have learned so much from you. And second, I have spent way to much time today going from room to room to see if things in my house look off!! I made a couple changes. Now what would i do without you!!:-(
And... I am really not loving the first photo. There's more wrong then the settee being to small. I am sure you would agree!

  22. oh my - I hope it was just a temporary glitch?! I so love your blog it feels so much more like a conversation than a commercial, you know what I mean? I realize that blogging takes so much time -- I would hate to see you go -- but would honestly understand if that's what happens. Take care & hope the images find their way home into their cozy folder once more.

  23. Nope it's not just you! ha. The first one is a bit like Alice in Wonderland or something -- crazy. The last image, I don't think the right side is quite in balance with that huge armoire either..... But, you knew that; hence the post. Say, I was looking for your email to chat about how I can tell if a kitchen is used. Since you asked . . . . Basically, it's usually all marble, perfectly arranged, very decorated and not many "personal" items. I bet you're having a blast with that little one!!! So envious. -s

  24. Thanks for all the great comment and yes, the last picture was to see who was paying attention... some of you were. lol

  25. Hi! I agree, it's not just you...It's like a shrunken object, being taken over by a big look! Also, I agree with the last photo being out of balance with that big armoire and the little collection of plates. Although I like to add plates when decorating, I don't think they work there. I hope that you continue blogging, although I perfectly understand being very busy...too busy for glitches like losing pictures. You are so talented and your posts are so well written...Very thought provoking...makes me want to run around, checking for balance! Have a wonderful day and thanks for the visit, Karen
