"My" Top Ten Design Elements # 6

# 6 The "Interior" should relate to the "Exterior" when you design a space. This is my view from my Dining Room and Family Room . . . I live in the country, so a modern space would not feel right in my home, nor would a "Beachy Feel" My home calls for a "Country Feel".

I picked a green , grassy color for my living room walls, used stone from our land for the fireplace ect. But it is not a " Theme " room ! So often I find that when one feels that their home calls for "Country," it must be filled with roosters. I don't have a single rooster in my home.

The artist that did our mural used our land as inspiration. I don't think I will ever paint over it. It has the spirit of our lives just wrapped around us, like a warm hug.

The"Country Feel"continues from room to room. This is our guest room, the art came from my own garden. Make your home personal. Tell your guest who you are .

Our master bedroom, again the art has that "Country Feel", imagine this same space with a painting of the ocean. I love the ocean, but it would not suit this room , in this house, on this piece of land. . . I know some would say that part of the joy of decorating is that, if you want to live at the beach and you don't, you can just bring the beach to you, with your decor. I disagree, but that is my humble opinion. What are your thoughts . . . Does your decor relate to your own surrounding?

  1. I enjoy it when you show pictures of your own home. I would love to see some other rooms, I have been waiting for a kitchen photo.

  2. I live in the city, but since I have lived in the country most of my life, then just traditional with a touch of country is me. Your home is gorgeous. Hugs, Marty

  3. Thank you Anon, I have to tell you that I am getting a bit "gun shy" when it comes to posting my own home and for heavens sake a post of "Tate". Everytime I do, I lose followers! I know that with so many blogs out there, to have any followers at all, is something to feel good about. I treasure each and everyone and hate losing them...I have already lost one since adding this post! But I will try to do a post of my kitchen soon. Thanks again. P.S. if you look at my older post, my kitchen has been posted many times. My older post are far better than my newer post... I am a lazy blogger! lol

  4. Hi Vicky! I love seeing inside your home. I think it's a calm elegant country look. Since we do live two blocks from the beach, I have some little subtle beachiness going on. I love pelicans and have a couple of paintings I love in the den. Also I have a little shell or starfish tucked around in places. I'm not into the all white and aqua and beach themed items all around. I guess I like more traditional comfy decorating and not 'the floor has sand on it' kind of look! ;)
Now girlfriend, no Rooster!? We've got to change that! :)
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  6. I always think it's o.k. for someone else who does say, a tropical themed room in their Midwestern house, but my own house is like yours: native stone, woods found here in the woods around us, locally produced and inspired art. It makes the house fit together naturally. (Country, but no roosters - that made me laugh!)

  7. ...your home is absolutely beautiful...it is truly timeless...it will be as beautiful in 3o years as it is today...i agree wholeheartedly with you on the setting of the house...it does indeed figure greatly on the interior space...people are drawn to what touches a place in their hearts...your home touches mine...

  8. I totally agree with you, in good design the exterior and the interior of a house should flow...the outside an extension of the inside. I loved seeing your rooms - warm, charming and right on for your setting and style.(-:

  10. Dear Vicky,
Your home is beautiful and elegant and you live in a gorgeous area of the country. I am shocked that anyone would quit following your blog because you show photos of your lovely home. I love your dining room with the country mural and fireplace mantle. It's really lovely. And I always enjoying seeing photos of it.
I live in an old subdivision and we are surrounded with huge trees, inside a large city. I'm not sure that my home reflects the outdoor elements, but what I do is try to do what is right for a little old 1927 bungalow. It's not traditional, nor is it country. It's a cottagey-old house style, I think. You can count me as being a faithful follower!
    Hugs, Cindy

  11. I realized I forgot that I was going to say I appreciate your blog for your point of view - getting to see how you apply it in your own home is definitely one of the aspects of your blog I appreciate. And your photography should feature whomever you like - it's another a way for fans like me to get to know you!

  13. For my own home, I completely agree with you but then I live in Santa Barbara less than a mile from the ocean in a setting that looks like Tuscany or the South of France so I get to go in exactly the direction I love with my decor. Tempted...but this is why all of the gorgeous gray out there floating around would never work here. However, I think that if it is done creatively and thoughtfully one does not have to be held hostage to their location or setting, especially if it does not feed their soul. And seashells in decor is historically rooted in the Cabinet of Curiosities movement that pre dates the existence of museums so the well traveled incorporated them into their decor no matter where they called home. I feel we can always arrive at a thoughtful and tasteful interpretation of what we love...I think the key is not to copy a trend or throw everything together that we like, but to personalize our decor so that it speaks to our personality as well as our surroundings as you suggest. Thanks for opening up this discussion.

  14. I live in Central Oregon's high desert ... snow covered mountains to our West, hills, rocks and wide open spaces to our East. My home reflects a casual theme in keeping with the landscape. Dark upholstery, comfy cushions, eclectic art, lots of candles, buttercup yellow walls, sandy-colored carpeting, stone colored tile in kitchen, slate in main floor bath.

Your dining room has been one of my all time favorites from way back in the RMS days!

  16. EXACTLY. House AND garden. I didn't know what to call it so chose Vanishing Threshold.

Adore that you've combined them. Filling your life with a moat of grace.

  17. Vickie, you have a gorgeous home, so comfy and cozy which is the way I like a home. Love your view too!!

  18. I agree, as always! Love your home. The style of my house outside is English cottage, which is what drew me to it. My landscape is English garden, too. I think my decor works well with this. Funny about the roosters. When I did my presentation for a business practices class years ago for my imaginary French European design business, I used a graphic of a rooster with a big X through it. :-).

  19. Hi Vickie. Totally agree with the outside/inside thing, but more importantly, staying somewhat true to the bones of the house. On loosing followers, yeah, it stinks, but being who you are and sharing what you love is what it's all about. I just commented over at Tartanscot that I love his plaid and traditional in a sea of so much modern. Being great in design is about appreciated all styles. You can't please everyone! I will say, though, that I hesitate to show my home because of my never-changing wood trim! Have a great day.
