The Bold and the Beautiful

The trick to using bold color in a space is to use lots of it. Each color has to balance out the other. So if you are thinking about some bold color for your own castle , be ready to commit. This is not an area to dip your toe . . . You have to be willing to dive !

  1. Hi Vicky,
I love the black painted walls! They are so dramatic, I don't think I could live in a house with black walls, but I love to see photos of them.
All of your images are wonderfully dramatic.
I love color, but the lighter hues.
    Hugs, Cindy

  2. I'm with Cindy on the black walls... very dramatic.
(probably too dramatic for me) I tend to only dip my toes in, I think that is the reason, I'm never happy with a room-- they don't come across as finished. Or Purposeful.
Hmmm... now, I'm thinking there is something to this. It's a well known fact with my family, I have commitment issues...LOL!
    Loving the eye candy.

  3. I love the living room. Nice colors together.
The black is dramatic, but I think I would become a little depressed after a while.

  4. Hi Vicky,
I agree with Cindy, the dramatic black painted walls are beautiful. I don't think I could live with them. I've always loved the last photo with the toile, checks and that fabulous chandelier! Wishing you a Happy Easter!

Annnnnnd, I've been considering a verrrrry, almost black, "Charcoal" color for a small little reading "bookroom", and seeing the first pic was a real TURN-ON!!! (Question is: Do I have the GUTS"?!?!?!?!?!?!)...

"You've got it GOIN', 100%, girlfriend!!!"...

    Big hugs,

  6. Hi Vicky, sending happy Easter bunny wishes your way. I appreciate this post - am contemplating indulging in color in my dining room but realize it will be a big initiative. Maybe didn't realize until now just how big. ~diane

  7. The first picture really is an eye catcher to me. I love the whole "drama" that room delivers.

Sorry about the bout with poison ivy and I hope you're feeling better.

    Happy Easter Vicky!

  9. I'm with Mary Ellen! That last shot is fab! I do love the dark walls of the first pic. Are they actually black? They look more like a very dark green to me...could just be my puter? Anyhoo I love the drama and masculine feel of that space. I'm trying to talk my hubbs into painting his office a very deep oxblood red...wish me luck! *winks* And Happy Easter Vickster! Vanna

  11. Vicky! So glad you are back. I too love the black room. I think maybe the key to the success of a space like this could be texture. I have looked intensely at this photo, and am guessing it is not just paint on drywall (which could come off like a sleazy night club). These walls look to me like they are black wool or flannel, or some kind a of fabric. The saturation of color (even black) in fabric walls like this is something that I think one would NOT get tired of. Think about it. You never tire of that same black blazer or trousers, or basic dress. I remember a room like this in Ralph Lauren's store in Chicago, a few years back. The walls were gorgeous fabric, and the room was stunning. The beauty of the room in the picture is also the rich woods and the fabulous olive green sofa interplaying with the black...and the crisp white moldings and trim work and ceiling. There are intentional reasons the black works in this room. I definitely think I could live with it!

  12. I love the 1st one best. I'm not sure I would be bold enough to go with that color but it's gorgeous.

  13. I have black walls in my home, and the strangest thing is that it always takes people a little while to realize the walls are black. It's kinda fun to see their faces when they realize it. We have tons of big windows and white trim throughout, so perhaps that is why it is not as apparent. I love, love, love the black walls!
