Form v/s Function

A good friend sent me this picture. She found this kitchen from "House Beautiful" magazine to be very pretty , until she looked a bit closer . . . Does it say, "Stunning, so screw Practical", to you? Or do you love it ? What are your thoughts on this kitchen? Inquiring minds want to know . . .

  1. While the sofa against the counter top definitely looks impractical. It looks like a comfy place to sit, while the hostess cooks, and passes the food over. Personally I adore my counter space and would probably end up spilling something on the sofa while cooking, making iced-t, or washing a pan.

  2. I think it is a very handsome kitchen, a bit dark for my own personal taste but done well. The sofa might be a bit impractical but looks amazing so it is looks over function on this one.Kathysue

  4. It's a beautiful room, but not very practical. I would definitely spill something on that sofa.

  5. I'm so sorry that I haven't dropped by in forever! Your new grandbaby is adorable!!!
As for that room. Really weird. I have never seen a sofa shoved up against a counter like that.

  6. Kathy Sue would not like my new kitchen, its chocolate. When do we have to go by normal, we have all different taste and that is what makes us unique. I knew most would not like my kitchen, but I did not do it for them . When people buy a house , the first thing a lady does is make it her own ,with her taste. I think the lady that owns this room is thoroughly enjoying it. If a designer does something outside the box, is it wrong? Kathy

  7. It is pretty, but I don't think it's practical to have the sofa right up against the island like that. I'd like to see some space between the island and the back of the sofa, but then it looks like that chandelier would have to move.

  8. I definitely don't like anything about it!

I had some trouble with this post, I could not get my other pictures of this kitchen to download... but notice the leg room at the bar?? and then the stove is in a hole. The larger picture moves like a cabinet door, but who would want to touch their art constantly?? And the small painting would have to be removed to get inside the cabinets. I also wonder about stains on a marble counter top, regradless of how much we are all loving them now... I have no problem thinking outside the box, the color is fine with me ect. But this kitchen missed the mark IMHO.

  11. It would be a grand room for young professionals ... definitely not for children ... spills on the couch and puncture marks on the leather chairs. Not good for pets either.

  12. I'd have to see the rest of the room to understand why the sofa is shoved up against the island like that. Was there not enough space to float that seating arrangement away from the island but the homeowner insisted on having it anyway? Is there no wall opposite the island on which to flip that arrangement, sofa against the wall? Honestly, this reminds me of when my grandmother lived in a 1-bdrm efficiency apt where the living room was directly on the other side of the kitchen peninsula (with the sink in it just like your pic) and she had no choice but to back her reading chair and bookcase right up to it. I wouldn't expect an odd arrangement like that in what looks like a pretty posh house.

  13. No, it reeks of impracticality to me. Are they cupboards behind that artwork? The sofa under the island bench just doesn't do it as far as I'm concerned, but each to his own. Remember, we are not living there and if the homeowner likes it that way then that's all that matters.

  16. My first thought was that these people do not have children. Mine would have been standing on the couch and using the couch to climb up on the counter. The art hanging on the cabinet doors is VERY impractical. I love the ceiling and the light fixture, though. I don't think I commented on your sweet little grand baby boy. He is so darling! You must be very proud, don't they just cause something to rise in your throat, such gratitude to the creator for those precious little ones. Hugs, Cindy S Have you checked out my new kitchen yet? I have photos of it on now.

  17. The couch looks quite odd there. I would put in new countertops with stools and place the table elsewhere... The couch has to go!

  18. From the photo's vantage point, I do not like anything about this kitchen. Too dark, and the light sofa and rug are so impractical. Only adults must eat here. I agree about the art too, who wants to clean it after cooking everyday. Not my favorite by a long shot!

  19. IF this area had been staged and the photo had been taken for a Real Estate Listing, it wud certainly not have generated my interest nor impressed me. -Brenda-

  20. It is just off! It looks as if the try to make it unique did not consider the practicality.

  21. Let's be honest here, you just know that people will laugh behind their backs when they leave that kitchen.

  22. I like a balance of practical and pleasing. This doesn't work for me. -s

  23. Reality - if this were my kitchen, that sofa would have lots of (thankfully hidden) drips down the back. I think that a big plus of having comfortable seating and dining space as part of the kitchen space is the sense of connectedness the chefs and the diners feel. Whoever is sitting on the sofa has his/her back to the person doing the cooking, so I think that the intimacy is lost. I think that rotating the seating 90 degrees would improve communication. Still, that layout plus the color choices may fill a need I'm missing.

  24. This is a tough one...could be the furniture, the styling, or both! Personally, I think the sofa failed in it's attempt to be a banquette and the rug is so unnecessary...very distracting with the chair legs hanging off. I too would be so curious to see the whole space. Was this a recent issue of HB???

  25. As a designer I find the concept quite nice...although I don't personally like the color scheme and the surfaces and styles selected, I think the idea of having some comfy seating in the breakfast area quite appealing. I see that there is no overhang of the countertop where the sofa is and that there are stools at the end, where there is an overhang. The spot the sofa is in is obviously not able to be utilized with stools,so they have treated it as a wall. I would placed the sofa a few inches away from the "wall" rather than right up against it. It appears as though this is a very flexible grouping that has many possibilities for arrangement depending on the occasion.
In my own breakfast area I have a similar grouping with a small loveseat, 2 chairs and a round table. It is not against my island, however.
    Thanks for sharing...Happy Valentines Day!

  26. Fun blog, lady. :) As for this pic - It's the opposite of practical...and I don't even think it would be comfortable?? I always wonder how much of these sorts of shots are just overly styled during the photo shoots??

  27. Love the color...but all I can think about is someone bonking their head on the counter rim as they plop down onto the couch. LOL.
