Show and Tell

1st the show : I wanted to show you guys my early Christmas Present . . . I have looked for a long , long , time, for a new Chandy for my dining room. I even had others looking for me . . . when I found one I liked, I did not want to pay what it cost . . . I found it very difficult to get both the design and price I wanted. I finally decided on this one from Ballards Design. I really like it for the space because it is big , but doesn't take away from the mural . How did I do?

Now for the "Tell" part of this post. I have a "Pet Peeve" about this subject and I have to ask so please do tell me . . . " Have you ever "sketched a design on a napkin?" I hear this all the time, I read it all the time. But for the life of me I can not get myself to believe it ! I have never gone to a design meeting without a pad of paper. I have never sat in on a meeting, that there was not a pad of available paper close at hand. So I have to ask . . . Have you ever ?

  1. Yes, your chandy is lovely. I really like the table and chairs too! Now for your pet peeve. I have sketched a design on a napkin. I am not a designer so I am not prepared with a pad all the time. I think if you are a designer you would have your sketch pad with you most of the time. Have a great Sunday. sandi

  4. Not me, though I have done a map or two. But hang around engineers anywhere in the world, and you'll see it. My sister and I were in a German restaurant, where you are not always seated at a private table. She's an engineer so she was laughing when she saw the guys seated next to her drawing on and talking while they examined a paper napkin (she doesn't know any German) but they looked and sounded like engineers. After they left, she went to retrieve it.... the surprise: they had drawn a shoe!

  5. YES! I sketched a prototype of a product I wanted to bring to the marketplace, went through all the necessary steps only to do a patent search and discover there had been other products too similar ... I wouldn't have been successful in getting that patent.

LOVE the light! You know how much I love that whole room ............

  8. I love your new chandy.

I'm not a designer--but I do have creative moments, and I have an IDEA notebook that I TRY to sketch my ideas into...but on occasion I sketch where I must. The back of a receipt, envelope, note card, business card--- probably a napkin too. Deep inside me there is an organized person crying to get out. She carries the IDEA notebook!

  9. Love the chandelier! It fits the space perfect. And, no haven't sketched personally on a napkin. But, I've seen it done. Dear friends of ours actually sat down to breakfast with an architect to "talk" about their NC vacation home. As they were talking he started sketching (on a napkin). Their home is beautiful and they kept the napkin as part of the history.

  11. Yes...sitting in resturants when discussing something...or when trying to explain an idea or concept to someone, I have written on a napkin. But I am one of those people who doesn't carry a lot of stuff in their purse.

The chandelier is beautiful, isn't it fun when you find just the perfect thing that you have spend lots of time looking for.(-:

I have sketched on scratch paper, but then when presenting it has been transferred onto something appropriate!

  13. I am so glad tht you have found the perfect chandelier for your dining room. It is perfect, it doesn't take anything away from the lovely mural and it suits the style of table and chairs that you have and I think it's gorgeous!!! I love it.
I'm no designer, but I have sketched furniture placement for a room for somebody and shown them what w/t's would look like in a room, on a napkin.

  14. Love it! It is truly the right one for the room.
I would hope that I wouldn't whip out a pen and grab a napkin with someone I'm trying to impress, but yeah, I have always sketched on napkins - drawings, the girls and I used to play tic tac toe on them, and a grocery list or two!

  15. Ideas come when they come and some times if you don't have a sketch pad I will draw on what is handy. I would hate to loose and idea for something great just because I didn't want to draw on a paper napkin. After all it is paper! Love the chandy. Kathy

  16. Thanks guys! I am so glad everyone likes the chandy... if you only knew how many I have looked at.
And I am going to think differantly about the napkin drawings... I guess people do really do it. I for one , would go to a without paper to a meeting and I would be eating with a cloth napkin...lol

  17. The chandelier is great...as it is impressive but you can see through it. I am guilty of a sketch on a napkin...but only when trying to illustrate something to a friend (not a client).

  23. Vicky, I have never drawn on a napkin, but I have been known to draw on whatever is available at the moment to explain to my hubby. I would never do that with a client though, I am with you , I have pencil and paper at all times. Love, love the chandelier,it is perfect for my favorite room in your house. I have always been in love with your mural. Kathysue

  24. Sketching on napkins is not only widespread and practical when the need arises during lunch and you don't have a pad with you, it actually has a name. We call them "napograms". Hmm. Cloth napkins are nice, but do I detect a note of snobbery about paper napkins?
