Design Predictions for 2011

A favorite blogger of mine, Susan at "Love Where You Live"http://thegreenplum.blogspot.com/ is doing a series called "What's in and What's out. I was honored that she asked me to play . . . My prediction is that we will soon move away from the all white and grey rooms. Yes, now that everyone has painted their walls grey and everything else from the floors to the dishes is white, I except to see more color.

Do I know this for sure, of course not ! I don't know a lot for sure, but the one thing I do know is that change will come. We tire of the same look and everyone strives to be different. So I assume that color will soon be added to all these grey and white rooms . . . very soon.

So far, this year, this is my favorite room ! When I saw it, my heart skipped a beat. Why ? Because it was different. Has pink and cream been done before, of course it has. But I had not seen it for a very long time. So tell me, What do you predict ? I would love to know . . .

  2. I don't know about style predictions, but I like yours. The gray and white thing was fresh for a while, but it was never for me so I really hope you're right! I hope you'll update us in a couple of months with more examples like the pink and cream!

  3. I wouldn't mind the grey going, because I have never liked grey. I do love cream, though, that one could come in and stay so far as I'm concerned.
I'll tell you what our magazine "Canadian House and Home" predicted. They said that valances are coming back (very tailored looking) but we have seen that before, as well as gold accents. Not too exciting in my humble opinion.
    Great post!

  5. I am totally on the same page as you on this one. I see the NEED for more color. I think the honeysuckle will worn more that displayed in our homes. Pink is a good color to wear for most people. I think all the grey and white fans will be adding it in the form of shell or cameo pink not the bright honeysuckle. You are right about most everything cycles around again!! I plan on doing some post on this very subject also. I have my own personal color of 2011 for ME and it is not Pink!!!
I already read your other post. So glad you posted on your blog also, have a great weekend,

  6. I don't know what the new design trends will be but I agree with you that there will be change because change is inherent. I was thinking yesterday how many years ago absolutely everyone was painting beautiful stained antiques and then it went out of fashion and everyone was trying to remove the paint and stain them again ~ impossible to recover the patina of the previous stain. For a while now that has been the trend again and of course down the line everyone will be stripping the paint off! Nothing is new again in interior decorating.(-: I love the white look but I need more color.

  7. I predict you are very right! House Beautiful has already started showing lots of color!!! I am ready for it. I am so tired of everyone's home looking alike. Color will be most welcome. At least we can all choose a different one. :)

  8. *** As USUAL, we're in tune here, Vicky... I don't know if I've ever told you that one of MY biggest "weaknesses" are PILLOWS... They can change the entire FEEL of a space as WELL as the look, don'tchathink??? (And they're "multiplying like rabbits", more n' more!... Helllppp!)...)...

We "Cancers" are home-lovers, & often times fickle, especially about our homes/nests (still have the same hubby for over 40 years tho... I do NOT feel the NEED to change THAT sweetfart!)... When WE married I was "the pink girl" (or as Julia Roberts put it, as I recall in Steel Magnolias, "bluuuush") and to this day have never really "tired" of SOME version of it, even if it's NOT in our home! I've been "FEEEEELING" it coming on/back into my life for MONTHS now... If I'm C*A*R*E*F*U*L, reeeeally careful, maybe Jim will actually LIKE it, if it's done correctly... "we shall see what we shall see", ja?

Loved yer pics here, kiddo! Big hugs to you, the family and tater-tot!

  10. For my own home, I'm predicting a pale blush pink bedroom with a painted Louis XV-style chair upholstered in a floral chintz (if I can find one, that is). I'm predicting a large French armoire, either painted or lime-washed, and filled with treasures from nature for my cabinet of curiosities. And I'm predicting yet another painted Louis XV-style chair, this time upholstered in a leopard print. Ahhhh, I can hardly wait!

  11. How about that? I was just thinking how we need more colors in our ambience. Love your choice, btw. It wouldn't work for my humble abode, but it is remarkably doable.

  12. Change is why I am always in trouble with the husband. It doesn't come cheap, does it?

  13. I agree Vicky, the all white or grey rooms are very trendy and hot now, but I believe will fade as they are just that. I've never been one to gravitate towards what's IN, rather I choose what I love and feel comfortable in. I do love neutral walls, only because they allow me to make changes to other elements in a room without a high price tag each time.

  14. Though I do like the serenity of grey and white rooms I totally agree with you that the trend will lean towards the use of more colour.

Your favourite room featuring the pink is indeed very lov-i-lee but I can also visualize it in BLUE. Can't you?

  15. Hi Vicky, hasn't this been a great series? I love what you are showing, and grey is just too cold for me. Great to look at, photographs well, but I wouldn't want to live in. It's just not me. I think you are right on with adding color, I think anyone who's done this look will start craving color very soon! Nice pics!

  16. I tend to pick what I like rather then what is in. Right now we are kind of French Country. I like things homey. We are in need of new furniture, so maybe I will dicide on a different design altogeather. Love the pictures. Where do find them?

  17. Oh, I hope you are right. I love color !

  18. Hi Vicky,
I love that room with the pink! In my single days...I had pink everywhere. When I got married 4 years ago I started getting rid of it slowly. I've been bringing it back in very small amounts. In my post with my olive/smoke kitchen knobs, that was my conservitive choice. I had the pink glass ones in my hand and put them back. :(
I've always had to have some color. White is beautiful in pictures though.
I like the checks, plaids, and gold/bronze metals that I've been seeing around. But who really knows.
Love this post! And agree with another comment that great traditional style will always be "in".

  20. I suspect you're on target, I think you have exceptionally good intuition and even more solid experience. My own home will forever be a work in progress, but it's ok, more fun for me. I do love the romance of pink in any room. Ah, big sigh!

  21. Hi Vicki! I think you are totally right about color coming back, I think so too. ..I also love that sofa in the last photo.

  23. Vicki: Very timely topic. I will make a stab, but will probably be dead wrong. Like many have said here, we are already seeing lots of color in the magazines. I frankly admit that I am tired of the ikat stuff, already, though. I am very tired of white sofas and have just never succombed because they just don't seem practical enough. My wife and I have trouble finding time to launder our own clothing let along the clothing of our furniture (slipcovers). I think neutral palettes are here to stay, but will morph. The grays in their extreme will mellow with other colors added in. I think anything natural in materials will last for quite a long time--wood, stone, straw, leather, etc. All the classics will stay and be skeletal in decor. I believe color will remain very regional. Warmer colors in the South and West and blues in Coastal areas, etc. Its just logical. The pinks you talk about may be a blurb, but I really don't think they will last any longer than the grays, except in their classic applications. I am guessing greens, expecially olives will get more popular and be trendy for a while. It's green's turn, I think. Come to think of it, they will go well with the pinks, too, but not the predictable pink/greens we've seen in the past. Olive/Salmon...I really think that anything done quite well, when it comes to color, will be very well received in the magazines and will look fresh and new. Sorry, all of this probably sounds like nonsense. Just my perspective...

  24. I tend to agree with you Vicky. Color will come back and I believe in 2011 we will see more of it. I like your pink ceilinged room. I have noticed pink cropping up here and there. Brooke Gianetti just made news when she painted her bathroom pink. It has been a long time since we have seen pink, but I think we are all ready for some glamour.
I for one am so tired of white and grey and am ready to see color return. Then, I will be back in style! I was beginning to think my style was dated....! Great post!

  28. if I could just sneak in here under the radar ...the true french farmhouse is neither gray nor white, like the trendy blogs are saying ...and jeanned'arc ... I find it hard to believe that they all actually believe it ...

there, I said it ... I do love neutrals but I don't claim my house as my french farmhouse ... are you picking up what I'm laying down?

  29. I agree with this! As much as I love white and grey, it has become too predictable. New year, new ideas!

  30. Hi, Vicky!

Pink and honeysuckle tones are definitely in this year, in part because it's Pantone's Color of the Year.

Cindy commented on two of the trends mentioned in Canadian House & Home magazine, and if you're interested, be sure to check out more of them on our website (www.houseandhome.com). We've got quite a few galleries and videos on 2011 trends, including:

  31. I agree. I do LOVE the gray! But it's not feeling authentic anymore kwim? Now people are painting everything gray just for the sake of copying the limed look of genuine old pieces.
I hope nobody will hate me for saying this, but the strong graphic on everything is also getting on my last nerve. It's a look that can't last because it becomes a strain on the eyes so quickly. Too trendy. I don't mind it in small doses but huge curtains....Please nooooo more!
That favorite room of yours stopped me in my tracks too! LOVE it!! I actually have that same rug.....I wish I had that same sofa!! It's dreamy! Vanna

  33. I think grey will stay but with added pops of color. I like lime green, orange, pink and blue. I also love bold graphics, geometric designs and mixing modern pieces with old. I still love the look of painted furniture and if the customers at the antique store where I retail are any indication they still love painted furniture too. I love your blog!
