Things are Changing . . .

Gone are the days of hiding the television . . . Today we see them right over the fireplace or on focal walls like these. I would love to hear what you guys think of this current trend.

  1. What do I think of this trend? Not much!

I liked TV's better when they were hidden. And I particularly dislike them above a fireplace. Every fireplace mantel is an opportunity to display something beautiful, and a TV is definitely not something beautiful.

  2. I am not a fan of the TVs above the mantle either. Such a great area and to have an ugly
TV above it is a shame. I don't mind them being "out" somewhere else in the room, but don't like them as the focal point.

  3. Okay, I love watching television as much as the next person, but I really don't like to look at them when they are turned off. Mine is kept in my armoire, and the doors are closed when the television is not in use. Maybe seeing it in a family room or den, but not in the living room unless you have a modern look and want to show off your technology stuff. I agree never over a fireplace...I mean never!!! And that is how I feel about televisions

  4. Nope I don't like to see them either. Mine are also hidden in armoires when not in use. Black voids....not too pretty. JMHO Vanna

  5. ...hate hate hate televisions above fireplaces...the only thing that should be watched with a fireplace is a fire...

  6. Im likely the only one to feel this way lol but I like that the magazines and shows may actually show how we really live, just like you never see a phone in design shows and magazines. Tv's are far better looking these days, if there is such a thing. Im actually proud of our tv nook and have no problem showing it. With the new plasma's and Lcd's it gives us so many more options in how we want to place our tv's, mine is on a nicely painted off white cabinet. So in my little opinion, im all for it, now that being said I wouldn't put above a fireplace because its too high for me and I would reserve that space for a beautiful mirror or art. Hope all is well Vickie, great post!

  7. Maybe in a family room, but def not in a living room. I kind of think they look better on another wall and when you are ready to watch it, pull it out from the wall a little.

  8. I think TV's are best hidden, there's nothing attractive about them. But, from what I have seen and experienced, men love BIG ginormous TV's and I don't think they have made armoires that size yet!:)
Thankfully, we don't have one to fuss over, and I'm SO glad.

  9. Oh Dear!!Kind of a bone of contention with me. I use to say absolutely not ever, now I am saying well maybe. I have mine hidden in an armoire. I don't like seeing the big black box. I know it is not in fashion to have one in an armoire but I don't care, I have never been on trend anyhow!! I just don't like the TV to be the focal point of the room, however it kind of it anyhow since all furniture arrangements point towards it. I will probably succumb to this look, but only if I get two matching sofas!!! Kathysue

  10. Ours is displayed like this. I don't mind it because it's hanging.

  11. I think its great that they are so narrow, and they don't have to stick way out from the wall now. But I don't want to look at it. Our family room TV is in a cabinet, and its the only one we have. We decided to do without TV for a year when I discovered that my daughter could name all the Kardashians and not one member of the Supreme Court. It was hard for the first month or so because it was such a habit for all of us. It has now been 15 months and we don't miss it. After the first year we started to watch once in a while (ok, the first thing we watched was the royal wedding), but we don't use it much any more. Out of sight, out of mind!

I feel the same way that most of you do about this. I like my T.V. hidden. But I am glad that they are not the eye sore that they used to be. Juju, I can not comment on your post for some reason... I still can't sign in either. I am just so sick of blogger. I wish I knew more about this stuff.

  13. I think they're ok in family rooms over fireplaces but not in living rooms. Have you seen those ones that look like a mirror when turned off? Those would be kind of neat above a fire place I think, if you must put it there, that's what I'd choose.

  14. Hmmm...
I don't have one of these tv's... our TV is still the big box and FINALLY, I have it hidden in our ET center; after years of it being on top!
We had to make some modifications--but I got that bad boy in there.
So, I guess I'm a hidden/out of sight TV person.

  15. I am mixed about it. I like to hide them, when possible, but the fact is that a lot of times, that is not possible. I think that form should follow function, though, and if the TV is a big part of your lifestyle, then it kind of silly to hide it. I do think that if it is out and showing, you should try to incorporate it into the decor and make it attractive. Just hanging it on a white wall is a last choice for me. Another thing I have found is that if the background or wall behind it is dark instead of light, it does not stand out so, and blends better. A backdrop of a darker quilt, rug, patinated shutters or doors are some good choices.

  16. Mine is in my armoire which is part of our entertainment center. We have a great room which means it is one big room so no separate living room. And we have a big clunker of a tv, I only close the doors when we have company. I am a house proud kind of a gal, but husband not so much. He likes what I do but when he is home he likes the tv tray next to him and all his newspapers and books and stuff and his tv on and he doesn't care that the remote has knocked a bird on its side on my bird table. Ahhh life. It bites sometimes. LOL

  17. I don't have a problem with the new flat screen tv. it is real, we watch it and it is part of our home, now that they are not ugly and huge they aren't an eye sore. I truly believe that homes are meant to be lived in and not a showplace. It is nice to have a clean organized and beautiful home but why do we try to hide a tv? They are a very big part of people's lives.

  18. I have to agree with the majority of comments here, as it's like this Ms. Vicky. Since I wouldn't dream of putting my Computer Monitor on the wall, why would I put my T.V. there? :)

  19. We have a TV cabinet with closing doors, the cabinet is made of antique pine and is a feature in itself. We never close the doors to hide the TV (but thats got more to do with the fact that the TV is always on!).
