Belgium Style

For the most part I think images like this one is what most of us think of when we think of " Belgium Style". The lack of color, things that look old and used, yet so beautifully put together.

I prefer a Belgium influence to the real thing . . . I love to celebrate the less than perfect, but I also need a bit of color.

To me the Belgium look is a look of simplicity. . . it speaks quietly and like a person of few words, will always get your attention.

Sometimes just a hint is all that's needed. It's knowing when to say , "stop". A room not afraid to have a bit less, knowing all the while, it will always be more. . .

  1. All of these rooms are lovely. I do like the 'pop' of the red chair against all of those nuetrals. I agree with you...one of the hardest things for me to do in decorating is knowing when to stop!

  2. Since I once lived in Belgium, I think that the above photos are very much like their style. I know that they never throw anything away and have homes full of lovely antiques.

  3. I really like your explanation of Belgium style. It is a nice understated way of decorating a home. I always enjoy seeing this style. I'm like you in that I like a bit of color around, too.

  8. If you are having trouble signing in on others blog do this. Don't check the little box with a check. For some reason it is the problem. Kathy

  9. I love the worn look and the shabby faded feel, but I get heaps of moans from my mum and sisters if I consider this option in my cottage makeover that I am doing at the moment. They make me feel so ashamed that I dare to allow breathing space to that piece of old junk, as they put it. My mum just gives me that look! She has influenced me up to now but I can feel a break out from what my family see as their kinda house. I bought a wonderful glazed cabinet and I got so much greif on Thursday when they came round as it was in pieces ready to paint. So I may need a bit of support from all my shabby chic, rustic worn but beautiful sisters out there!

Debbie, I tried to leave a comment on your blog, but like so many others I was unable too. Don't ever let anyone tell you how to live and what to love. If it makes your heart sing, go for it. I can't wait to see the magic that you create.

  11. The style is definitely the Belgium style. Old but with style and grace. They really are fascinated with old stuffs.

  12. Just love the comfortable feel of neutrals. Makes me want to curl up with a good book, sip from my favorite beverage (wine or port for me, but choice your own poison) and feel good. The pop of color from the chair is a great touch ... or flowers ... or something colorful that you love. Good stuff. Thanks. Bob
