Pet Peeve ~ Puddles

Quote by James Swan : " Never Puddle. Like shoulder pads and Lycra leggings, puddle curtains are fashion items just looking for new victims. Curtains should "break" (like a gentleman's trousers) one-half inch from the finished floor. No more and no less. Period."

Mr. Swan, I'd have to agree . . . Your thoughts?

I want to take the time to explain why I have not visited some of you forever... I can no longer sign in on blogger on my own blog and many of yours. Sometimes I am signed in on certain blogs and others I am not. Try as I may, it just does not work everywhere... so thanks for visiting me anyway. I am trying.

  2. I feel the exact way about curtains! I can't stand when they sit on the floor like that, it's just collecting more dust and dirt!

  3. Hooray, hooray! I can't stand puddling! It would have to be THE most impractical thing out. Glad you've brought it to everyone's attention. NO PUDDLING!

  4. I don't mind the way they look, but it would drive me CRAZY in my own home.

  5. Luckily I haven't made any drapes that puddle in many years. The style now is to have them break but only if they're not traversing. Sorry your blogger is being annoying !

  6. Oh dear...I guess I am on the outs with this one as I love drapes that puddle, but only if they are decorative and not funtional...so maybe that makes me half correct anyway.(-:

Sorry about your blogger problem that would drive me nuts...hope it can be resolved.

  7. Actually I don't mind drapery that puddles provided decor 'n function is taken into consideration. They must also have the proper heading and be full enough in width to accommodate the drop and attain the proper aesthetic; plus the puddle itself should not be excessive.

In the photos you have shown; IMO the puddle in 'each' case is much, much too long. Three to four inches is more than sufficent! With all that said, to achieve the proper look they should be 'custom made', no different from a two piece ensemble that may include shoulder pads and lycra pants as to me its really all about 'the construction and importantly the fit'. -Brenda-

  8. Hi. I like puddles but not waterfalls. I can comment from mi I/phone but not my laptop. Weird.

  9. I tried it with my living room drapes. It just never hung right. And the odd time I did manage to get it "right" the kids would play hideandseek behind it and mess it up. I finally took them down and hemmed them up a few inches and re-hung them. I like it much better now.

  10. LOL
I hadn't thought of that before. Good point.
Looks like I would trip on those.

  11. They are an accident just waiting to happen, that is for sure. I don't puddle mine, I could never make them puddle properly, so I hem mine up. I do have a hard time getting my draperies to hang like a fine gentlemans trouser, though, I'm afraid. They are more like an inch or more from the floor. I always hope that nobody notices;)
    Great post, Cindy

  12. too me it depends on the fabric. I like light fabric that puddles . heavy fabric looks unfinished if its too much...

  13. I personally am not a fan of puddling, however I have seen it done in very elegant, formal rooms where it does look appropriate. I am not really very big on window treatments. I like my windows open for the view and for letting light in. I have also seen puddling that is done that is too skimpy and it just looks like the homeowner mis-measured for their drapes. If you are going to puddle, do it with grandeur or not at all!! Kathysue

  14. I think puddles can be pretty, but I have not found them functional except for cats and dogs. More times than not, it's a great nesting spot for the pets.

  15. Hmmm... don't care for puddles either. Like Cindy...my drapes are not quite the men's trouser style either.
My drapes are more like high waters...but not capris either...LOL.

For you gals with the too short drapes. I have run into this myself. An easy fix is to put them up on rings with clips. If they are too heavy for that, just add button holes to the top of the drape and then use decorative shower rings. I have done this many times, works great and will add at least an inch and a half to the drapes.

  17. I'm so glad I saw this today - I am about to hang some drapes and was wavering between 'romantic puddling', and a cleaner look. This is a sign! No puddling for me!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I always thought puddled drapes just looked like dust and dirt catchers. I like the clean line of a straight drape.

  19. I agree! Don't want puddles, of ANY kind, ;), in my house. Just too much temptation for kittens... Also, a word to the wise: Don't select long tassle fringe to edge your drapery panels with either if you have kittens in the house...been there, done that! :)

  20. I tend to go with puddling. Guess, I'' be in the minority. Otherwise, curtains just seem a little too "high-water." With that said, I don't care for the puddling effect of the top photo. Maybe because it looks rather low and heavy. BUT I do like the softer puddling of the white curtains.
cheers! (p.s. blogger is driving me nuts. i think i just lost some previous posts. ugh.)

  21. I think drapes that puddle sometimes get a bad rap. When done well, like these examples you've shown, they make everything else in the room look all the better yet elegant. :-)

  22. I am the minority, I luv puddling. I don't have drapes at my window but I do have sheers that puddle and I wouldn't have it any other way. :-) http://decoratingwcents.blogspot.com/
