Design Lesson ~ Diagonal

Diagonal : Connecting two non-angles.

Whenever you want to make a space look larger, consider a diagonal design on the floor. This one simple trick will make all the difference.

When using two very different colors, it will add a lot of drama as well. A black and white combo will always be a classic.

You can do this with paint or a rug. Don't limit yourself to tile . . . Notice the window , a lot of thought went into this simple space.

There is a lot going on in this kitchen, they needed the diagonal floor, but knew to keep the color with a low contrast.

I love this bathroom, though I don't think the tub would be all that comfortable. However, I would give up comfort, for all that charm.
I have a diagonal floor in my small kitchen with a diagonal back splash. Where have you applied the trick of " Diagonal" in your castle?

  3. Love a diagonal floor, it is sometimes hard to get right. I know I did that in my master bath and made sure the cuts would be right with a dry-lay first before I let them cement it down. You have some really great images showing examples of how great it can look!!

  5. I don't have a diagonal anywhere at the moment, as hubby would always say it would use more tile to do so. I do have it on my list of things to do when we down-size, though. I am determined to have a black and white diagonal floor!

  7. All the floor tile in my house is on the diagonal! It was such a priority when we built the house that I made sure I budgeted for the additional cost of labor and materials to install it! I think it makes ALL the difference in the world.
Love all the examples you posted! #1 and #5 are my favorites!

  9. * Reallllly nice examples here, Vicky! Except for the rooms we had re-done in hardwood (remember the two us us going thru THAT at the SAME time? THAT made it kinda "more fun", didn't it?!), all of our home is 24" travertine n' yes, laid on the diagonal... I think that's the ONLY way to have it done~~~ it just looks so "right"!!!

Again, such nice pics here!!!Thanks, dahlink!

  10. I adore the diagonal look. I've always wondered how people get the clean edges of the squares so perfect when using stain instead of paint. I've always wanted to stain my floors this way. Maybe someday!

  12. Good insight, Vicky! I have used this technique with painted floors with very effective, results. One other thing that can visually stretch the space is to consider the scale of the pattern. I think the tendency is to use too small of a pattern on a floor. By ramping up the scale, it really expands the space, visually.

  20. I totally agree with you Ms. Vicky that a diagonal floor gives the illusion of space and would love to do it in my vestabule 'n hallway, however due to my home's layout am not sure it would be feasible thus I am seriously considering it for my Kitchen.

    Beautifuly examples, BTW. -Brenda-

I love the look of a diagonally painted floor or tiles set on the diagonal. But, I have never used this anywhere, ever. I would really love to, though.
