The Other Side of Symmetry

In all things there is good and not so good . . . Love the twin chairs in this room and the piece over the sofa provides the unexpected .

With all that is going on in this space, the symmetry of the matching chairs, pillows and lamps keeps this space from going over the top.

I also like the quietness of the symmetry in this room. The architectural elements of this room give it a focal and isn't it just wonderful ?

The art of this space creates so much interest that the symmetry again keeps things in balance. I wanted to show the other side of symmetry, I hope we never forget to use it with caution, but do use it, for it is wonderful when done right. (This post is to follow the one before.)

Pet Peeve ~ Symmetrical Overload

I know I am going to get debated on this one and I am okay with it . . .

But I am just not a Symmetrical kind of gal . I know that it keeps things calm and quiet and most designers love it, but for me it can be a bit too quiet and a bit boring.

Even in the nicest of spaces, I find myself wondering what could have been. Where is the something unexpected, the element of surprise ?

I guess I like to take a change and be creative when I design. So no, it is not for me . . . how do you feel about Symmetrical Overload ? Debate me, bring it on . . .

Vignettes

Vignettes are special treats for the eyes. They are small scenes in a larger setting; islands of beauty.

Any surface ~ bookcase, table, desk, mantel or ledge is a candidate for a vignette.

The ideal is to create a composition that invites viewing and stirs interest, even if just in passing .

Hopefully one will create a subject for conversation . . . do your vignettes give you things to chat about?

Get to know A.D. Greer

Aubrey Dale Greer was born in Austin Texas, but lived in Oklahoma most of his life. He was active in the art world from 1938 to 1986 as a painter, muralist and commercial artist.

Greer studied under the English artist Robert Wood, it was with Wood that Greer formed his color palette and mastered his technique .

Mostly he painted Southwestern landscapes, but not always.

His painting sale for around $12,000 to $15,000 dollars now at auction.

A few years ago, I ran upon a print of one of his painting at a antique store ! It hung in my living room for many years, and I still love it. However , when I purchase the oil painting that I am using now, it went into the attic . . . I am ready to let it go. If anyone is interested in placing a bid on this piece of art I will sale it to you. I paid $75.00 for it and would not want to take any less as I think that was a steal ! Brunch in the Garden

Today I held a bridal brunch in my garden for my daughter's best friend... I am too tired to get very creative with this post, but wanted to share a few pictures I took before the guest arrived.

We could not have ask for a prettier day, cool and just a bit of wind.

This is where we put the gifts ... mine, and my girls were the only ones there at the time.

A touch of blue is always so wonderful outside . . .

I had the guys carry my dining room table outside and it was filled with lots of goodies . . . Everyone had a great time, but I am getting too old for all this work ! I hired someone to take pictures for the bride, so I may share some of hers at a later time with the food and guest .

Multiple Choices

Certain types of art looks best when displayed in multiples. They make the strongest decorative impact in a group arrangements.

The highlight of this grouping is the identical frames and the vast amount of mirrors used.

Rarely will you see original art arranged in this manner, for it would be quite expensive. More reasonably priced prints however, make great multiples choices. Do you have any multiples in your castle?

Color Shots

Because sometimes we all need a shot or two. . .

Pet Peeves ~ Coordinating Books

I don't have the words to tell you how much I hate this . . . The Coordinating Books just ruin this perfectly nice room for me . I love my books and can not imagine not being able to find one because they were all made to look the same.

Somehow it just seems to disrespect the books. My books are my friends, I have at least two that I am reading at all times, when I am just passing time, it is usually with a book. I just do not get this in any way. . . How do you feel about coordinating books ?

Brown

There is something dramatic about a brown room . . . not quite as bold as a black or red room, but it does certainly make a statement.

It is somehow familiar and friendly . . . think of a Hershey's chocolate bar or a cafe latte . . .

Often associated with intimacy, and in years past used mainly in libraries and bedrooms. Today brown is showing up everywhere. You can count on a "serene feel" in the space that uses brown.

There is now a increase of appreciation for neutrals in today's decors and brown is taking a leading role. A hue I could certainly live with . . . how about you ?
