Pet Peeves ~ Coordinating Books

I don't have the words to tell you how much I hate this . . . The Coordinating Books just ruin this perfectly nice room for me . I love my books and can not imagine not being able to find one because they were all made to look the same.
Somehow it just seems to disrespect the books. My books are my friends, I have at least two that I am reading at all times, when I am just passing time, it is usually with a book. I just do not get this in any way. . . How do you feel about coordinating books ?

  1. Thank God! I'm with you - why would anyone do this? Insanity, I say. How do you find a book? I have many decorating books and design books that I refer to frequently and this would drive me nuts. And I can't imagine going to find a book that I love and want to re-read or loan out and have to open them all up.

  5. It would definitely make it hard to find a certain book. I love books too.

  6. Hi Vicky...

Ohhh...I totally agree with you! I love how books look..the bindings and I think they can really warm up a shelf! All coordinated kind of ruins that! Okay...can you just imagine sitting and covering allllll of those books...so time consuming...not to mention, how much that probably cost! Hehe!!!

Have a great weekend, my friend!
    Love ya,
    Chari

  7. I'm not alone! LOL..I love books for books, and I am constantly taking them off the shelves so I'd go nuts if I couldn't see right away who was who! lol

  8. You know, you are so right!! It is so disrespectful of our wonderful friends. My husband and I both collect books, I collect mostly to read but I also have some just because they are great for decorating. But I love it when someone visiting me will stop and read the title of my books. The books people read tell you alot about the person. I am always surprised, too, when people have no books around. We are not TV watchers, so I don't know what I would do without BOOKS. Hugs, ~cindy s~ And thank you for stopping by my blog and for your sweet comment.

  9. I've seen similar pics like these. The top is so blah without the books titles and true covers. No character. The wood look on the bottom looks like pieces of wood stacked side by side. They took some of the character out of the room when they covered the titles with contac paper? or are they real pieces of wood?

  11. I remember back in the day watching a Christopher Lowell show on a day-off school...and his guest decorator said, "Books are just accessories. Nobody really reads all of them." How wrong he was. I agree with you. Love love love the books. Keep them.

  12. I'm with you - I want to be able to see which book it is. I don't like the second room at all. Yikes, I wonder what they were thinking! ☺ Diane

  13. Agreed! I only collect hardbacks so they look good on a shelf but I can stand the monotone look.

  15. If you are going to cover all your books to match your room, why bother to have books at all? I confess, however, that the books on the bookshelf in my living room are organized by color (all the blues together, all the reds together etc.)to give a slightly more pulled-together look.

  16. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This always drives me nuts or the ones where the spines face in...have you seen this stupidity???? How are you suppose to know whats what????
I believe people who do this are using books only as accents to the room...& their ego.

  17. Yes, Alicia I have seen them with the spines faced in... HOW STUPID DO YOU WANT TO BE!!!

  18. Oh my! That second photo is awful, Why would any one want to do this to books. As I sit here looking up at all my multi colored book bindings, knowing what I'm looking for some times by color along. Now let me see,,, that "Provencal Interiors" is cream with gold lettering,, found it.

ps; Thanks for your kind words.

  19. I am definitely with you on this one, I do not like it either. I do not understand how one would find the book they were looking for when the title is covered up. Also, I like the depth all the different colors of each book bring to a bookcase or shelf. I do not care for the monochromatic look that covered books have in these pictures.

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend, Nicole

  20. As an author who knows the infinite time and care that goes into choosing a book jacket and design, it always makes me wince to see decorators do cutesy things to a collection of books. I want to scream "enough already!"

  21. hehe, I rather like them. my bad!

  22. I don't care for this trend. I think it is just plain weird. Nancy

  23. Ha...I guess it just goes to show that life would be so boring if everyone had the exact same taste!

I absolutely love the covered books, and in fact, I'm getting ready to do this in my own home. I can't decide if I want to do all white or choose some fun patterned papers, or maybe do a mix of both. I've also seen books covered in gorgeous fabrics. I love it!

Why do it? Well, for me the reason is because most of my books have covers in burgandy, dark green, navy blue, etc. These colors completely clash with my bright turquoise, yellow, apple green interiors!

So I give a big "thumbs up" to this trend!

  24. I'd never cover my books. Monotones are monotonous to me. I do like when folks display color coordinated books, then, it becomes useful art.

  25. Shows ya how much I know! I didn't even KNOW people DID this!! That's insane!!!!!!! AND ugly!! I love the way books add character and individuality to a space...not to mention color! Thanks for enlightening me about something you'll never see ME try! LOL Love ya! L~

  26. The picture that is lower is all the same color because it is all carved out of wood. The man who made it is a master wood carver. I just got an article about him in an email. He has actually carved full sized cars and complete rooms. He is extremely talented and although from a decorating point you wouldn't want everything the same, it shows that he has amazing talent. If it were painted you would never believe he had carved it all out of wood.

  27. Yikes I definitely don't like this look either.

  28. I totally agree. Books, just like people, have their own unique personality.

    Thanks for sharing your ideas.

  29. I once went to a showhouse where every single book was wrapped in white paper. You couldn't even see the title of the book! This made me a bit sad - having a husband who is an author, I understand the time and effort and blood, sweat, and tears that go into a book!

I don't mind coordinating by color, though. I have a huge built-in bookshelf in my bedroom, and I was thinking about pulling every book out, dusting (desperately needs to be done), and rearranging by color. We will see how it goes!

  30. I call books "friends with spines" and I prefer to see them.
