* I reeeeally LIKE it, Vicky-girl~ A*L*O*T!!! It looks like such a warm, relaxed n' loving family lives here~ and, it ALSO looks like the owners have a great sense of personal style, w/ the FAMILY being the #1 priority at the time (and that's SOOOO nice to "see"... especially nowadays!).
I ADORE the comfy chairs, & LOVVVE the simple colors n' total "FEEL" of the entire space... it's N*O*T "perfect", & THAT speaks wonderfully fabulous VOLUMES to me about the owners, their lives and "who" they REALLY are!!! (Great folks, I expect, and lotsa fun, too!)~~~ "GOOOOOOD CHOICE" today, Sweetie!!!
THANKS and warmest hugs, Linda (P.S. Plz keep "MY" penny. I may NEED it~ and sooner rather than later!!!~ Smiles!)
The ladder seems oddly situated or the art behind it forgotten -- didn't quite get it. The portrait is a little too "in your face" for me but cute kid. I'm assuming if there's firewood that somewhere in that room is a fireplace? Hope it's nearby. But other than that, I think the drapes are nice and the chairs look comfy and functional.
Love the colors and that little pop of blue. I'm not a fan of big photo art like this piece... especially if that child lives in this house. I really like the basic furnishings and the drapes and I think I'd like the small painting too if it weren't hiding behind the ladder. Accessories on the cocktail table are too small, I'd like to see something a little more dramatic there. If the fireplace is to the right of the console table, just outside the frame, I'm ok with the firewood. This is basically a good space that needs a little tweak to be great... if it were up to me... but it's not! I hope whoever lives there is absolutely in love with it!
Interesting. I wonder if the wood is real or that arty fake stuff I've seen on the web...not kidding either. I also think the coffe & end table decor is off scale.
* Just HAAAD to return to the "scene of the crime", Vicky! I was sooo curious to see the reactions of others, most especially regarding the too-small accessories on the big coffee table, the over-sized (but darling) pic of the child who most likely LIVES there (so it's not really "necessary" to BE there, so "in your face") and the LACK of comments/questions about the three "thingies" hung above the drapes...
I LOVE that people are STARTING to TRULY "speak their minds" more lately... and about "everything"! I absolutely love it~~~ it gives folks some great food for thought (or at least "great APPETIZERS"! Grins!)... HUUUGE KUDOS to you for ENCOURAGING IT!!!!!!
What I found "most interesting" about this photo is that is looks like a "REAL" space, "warts n'' all", and THAT's still what I find appealing about it... it's certainly not staged, but actually LIVED IN by some pretty stylish folks who do NOT want a "designer space" (those are SOOOO EASY to produce, IMHO! However, it's HARDER to create a TRUE sense of "HOME", and STILL be "stylish" ... again, IMHO of course!)...
Love it...o.k. Vicki, see that ladder,John made me one just like it and then got an order for one RUSH,so he asked if he could take mine, that was in March and I still don't have one!!! I will forgive him cause he has been crazy busy, but now I want it back!!! Talk soon,Chrissy
i love "real" rooms like this. they obviously have decorated it with things that matter to them and that is what makes it great. of course that's just my opinion, but then again, you asked for it! janet
Your a hoot!! But we do agree,I don't think this is magazine worthy either, but I don't mind it,kinda lived in looking!! Oh,good idea about getting my ladder back!!! oxoxoxox
I feel there is much to be said about FUNCTION namely being..... furniture and accessory placement. Wrong, wrong??
Two examples: Traffic pattern -- Why is the door which appears to lead to a lovely patio, obstructed by furniture? Lighting -- There are three sources (general, task, accent) all located in one area. Why aren't they more evenly and effectively distributed?
(I would like to see the rest of the room.) -Brenda-
To me it looks like the ladder was left-over when the decorator tried to put the three "still life sea objets d'art" over the cornice. I can imagine all sorts of directions the decorator was trying to go for...I just don't think it's very cohesive.
Hi Vicky, how is your summer going. It has been nutty here and i miss visiting all my favorite blogs, so much to catch up on. As for this picture, I love the mix of items (some may not be my choice) but none the less i like that its not matchey and predictable. I like that it looks like a real family lives here and the picture of the child is adorable in my opinion and even though its large scale its not offensive. I really love the ladder, but i would have to remove the picture behind it. Overall i rather like the room, it speaks family and inviting. Another great post Vickie! hugs janet
I would move the ladder to another room, take the light off from the big picture, clear off the coffee table, stack some books there in a taller stack to match the scale of the table and maybe one larger focus piece on the coffee table, remove the blue vase and add that pop of color in 2 throw pillows that will stand out on the chairs...and eliminate the table between the 2 chairs. Also- paint over those medallions on the cornice board...
Just my 2 cents...and I love hearing what others would do.
Overall, I like it . . . but I don't quite understand the ladder. ?? Oh, I guess I will confess this, too: I'm conflicted over having the kiddo jumping out at me. I think he -- and the huge poster size portrait -- is great . . . just not sure I would have placed him there. Love the chairs, curtains and acylic table.
I guess it is my turn... linda, for the first time ever, we disagree. I do not like it for so many reasons, the giant photo would be a good starting point, then we could move to the blocked door to the patio, scale of the coffee table , plus the scale of the accessories on it,love the ladder, but putting in front of the art??? We all hope there is a fireplace that is not showing, no lamp between the chair, but one over in the already lit corner? And the finishing touch for me would be the BLUE vase. I can not believe this made it into a magazine, but it did! Thanks for playing everyone, I like these "Something to talk about" post, do you guys?
Not loving it at all! The scale is way off, your eye doesn't know where to settle. I'm sure the chairs are quite large, but look dwarfed by the portrait! The accessories are too small.
I love the portrait. Have to agree about the fire wood. I would be wondering about insects and spiders. Maybe wicker baskets instead? The the chairs are great but look uncomfortable without arms. Which would be okay in a formal living area but not in a less formal room like this one. Love everything else. I nice mix of contemporary and traditional.
* Hi, gf (and friendS!)! I LOVE that we don't all "see & think alike" on this one, & CAN admit it & feel totally free to talk about "WHY", don't you??? I think it's a "NEW", INTERESTING n' FUN thing we're doing here right now!!!(And Vicky-girl, this is THE first time we HAVEN'T been "in complete sinc", huh?)... I think we should ALL, ALWAYS speak our truths as we see them... ("gently n' kindly" as is done here yes, but speak them for sure!)~
ANYhoooo, I really WOULD like to reiterate that I DOOO like it BECAAAAUSE it's N*O*T... I repeat N*O*T... "PICTURE/MAGAZINE/DESIGN & DESIGNER PERFECT", but truly DOES feel comfy, like this family really DOES actually L*I*V*E in this space & that is reflected in its "style"!!!
Yes, everyone KNOWS the coffee-table is POORLY accessorized~ that was a given at first sight~ however, I wanted/chose to think that their sweet child PICKED those flowers & proudly brought them to Mom~ & Mom lovingly placed them RIGHT WHERE THEY ALL SPEND TIME TOGETHER, so they could ALL "share" their simple, if rather "undersized" beauty.... Kind of like the 3 books (reminding me of the "Three Bears"!)... all stacked in one bigger pile WOULD certainly LOOK better here (even tho we always do things in 3's), but once again, I think THEIR child IS the true heart of this home, & maybe the three stacks of books and/or small photo books represent Dad, Mom and child's interests.(?)~~~
Don't worry, I am not the least "defensive" & for SURE see what others DON'T care for... Guess tho, "it" all STARTED me THINKING this was because of the OVERSIZED PIC and the THREE "PORRIDGE" BOWLS right from the start!?!?
LOVE the photo and the ladder. Oh, and the chairs too. I'd add a bit more color for a pop, and perhaps a little less clutter (I'm funny that way). But I like that it looks REAL and LIVED IN. Thx for sharing! :)
Sorry it took me so long. I've had the flu. Okay, there are certain elements in the room I love! The chairs, the drapery, the ladder, and I'd love to see the rest of the room. But the firewood? The shrine to the very cute child? The too small lamp and accessories. If this client called me, I'd be saying "Honey, what took you so long?" The space needs to be edited and the furniture arrangement tweaked. My biggest question is, What the heck are those things over the window? Okay, that's as much as my fever ravaged mind can come up with right now.
Just read your sweet note...ahhh, so happy that you missed me, my friend! Just been busy with the summer...kiddos, vacation, and a few summer projects! It's all cramping my blogging...Hehe! So happy to see you though!
Well my friend...I studied this room and I don't hate it...my first feeling was that I did like it! But there are several things that I would do differently! What I do like is...those beautiful french doors and love the drapes! I love the chairs! But that's about it! I would have to move furniture...don't like the chairs blocking the doors! I'm not sure what purpose the ladder serves and it's blocking the art. I really don't care for large personal photos used as art...at least not in this area. I really don't like the coffee table or the accessories...but it's a little too modern/contemporary for me...that's just my own personal preference! hehe! But the bottom line is...it's really difficult to critique just a corner of a space...if we could see the room in its entirety it might make a huge difference! Okay...now that I've taken the bait...I'm curious as to who this home belongs to? Just watch, it's probably some famous designer...hehe!
P.S. = added you to my blogroll - a complete oversight as I adore your blog and think it is one of the best out there (I have put one of your posts from earlier in the year into my best of 2009 file already!).
Interesting. All I could think of was are there any insects in that stack of fire wood under the portrait? (I am very phobic about insects!) Deborah

I liked that they combined very modern furniture and classic chairs.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures (albeit lovely) is just too large for my taste.
The ladder is cute but I hope she doesn't have kids. Kids could make trouble with an easy to get to ladder.

My favorites are the curtains and the ladder - love that!!
ReplyDeletethanks for the comment, girl! you are too sweet!!!!!!!!!!!
It bothers me that the beautiful French door is completely blocked by furniture!
