Forgotten Spaces

Halls, staircases, doorsteps are all "non rooms" that have incredible potential for something unique to happen. Notice how a whole new set of windows have been painted on this wall in Ms. Joan Rivers home.
Spaces often passed by on ones way to another space can become "Art Galleries" to stop and enjoy for just a moment.

Do you have a sadly ignored space, that could be a golden opportunity to showcase something wonderful in your own castle?

  1. In our 2000 square foot apartment we have lots of wall space. I've been decorating it with photos, word wall decals and artwork.

  3. I love the idea of using a stairway as a photo gallery...some day may be I will get around to actually doing it!

  4. We have a tiny little vestibule/back entrance that is too small to hang any art from. I've been thinking about a mural...hmm, great ideas. I'd like to turn this little forgotten space into something special. Thanks for the inspiration.

  5. Ohhh, I love Joan Rivers hallway. What a great idea! I am trying to figure out what else I can do with the entry room that I put the word "Home" in. It is usually filled with coats and is very utilitarian, but it is the first thing that people see when they enter my house, I would like for it to be a little more attractive. Oh well. 6. Yes. The wall at the end of my hallway needs new art. But I won't buy anything til I find the perfect piece. I've been on the lookout for almost two years!

  7. Cannot believe Ms. Rivers' hall .... it honestly LOOKED LIKE WINDOWS ... I had to look closer when I read the comment. I'd probably try to shut the windows, so would likely need something like the gallery wall ... lol!
Thanks for sharing and stirring us to look at our own spaces in a new way.

  8. ....but, but, but when one has sixteen spaces that have been forgotten or more like ignored ...oh the horror...it becomes an overwhelming challenge. Winks! Yes dear Vicky my renovations are STILL in the planning stage and all forgotten spaces will be taken into consideration. Thanks for the motivation!!!!!!! Now if I cud just find the time 'n energy...... and oh do you have a few dollars to spare? American currency will be just fine. Also as I do have a long hallway, do you think there is any possibility that Ms Rivers wud donate hers to me.....if I ask nicely? :)
Many Hugs -Brenda- GREAT POST BY THE WAY!

  9. I love your reminder that even those "pass through" spaces can be beautiful and inspirational. Like Brenda, I have several of them. I need to get about the business of bringing them to their full potential. Thanks for the inspiration Vicky!

  13. * Vicky-girl~ Great idea for a blog today!

I believe they (hallways) CAN & SHOULD be a pleasant n' charming (or dramatic!) lil' "side-trip" on the way to the "main destination", if at all possible~

It's NOT my intention to get picky-picky now girlfriend, buuuut, I personally had trouble "enjoying" Joan's hallway... my eyes just went STRAIGHT to those two, "lovely-but-intrusive/invasive" chairs, that just DON'T belong there! IMHO, ANY "furniture" in a hallway should be in scale w/ the space. I would THINK if ANYTHING were to be placed in the hallway, that maybe beautiful, old, rectangular flower boxes, filled w/ pretty, healthy trailing ivy and/or other pretty greenery~ and/or blooming flowers~ & placed in or on the windows/sills, would look SOOO much better... Just my thinking out loud here ~~~ What do YOU really think, girlfriend?

Big hugs to you, Brenda and Carol!
    Love,
    Linda *

  14. * (OKAY, here's my "P.S/"point""~~~ One should never have to circumvent furniture to get from one destination to another... it shouldn't be an obstacle course! Again, just IMHO! XOXO)~

  15. Hey guys, Linda, you are so correct! I usually put things like that in the "trying too Hard box". Brenda, I too am in the mist of a few projects... stacks of wood flooring waiting to be put down, stacked stone for a wall in my forgotten space also waits. I want to see your finished spaces. Don't forget to e-mail me with a few pictures. Thanks everyone!

  16. Absolutely! My entry needs help, and it's pretty big. Love these shots for inspiration. Some art may be nice, since people spend time there.

    Thanks!

  17. does a little hidden vestibule need to "match" the rest of the house or can it be a bold statement on it's own? i've always wondered that. your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

  18. I just love a large collection of framed art like you've shown here. I like Joan's hallway, but I don't think I would have been able to paint over windows. I love streaming light. cheers, -susan
