The Dance

Furniture provides many flat surfaces for the placement of accents. Coffee tables, consoles, side tables, desk and bookcases are all potential dance floors.
Though our dance floor may be the back ground for our loved objects, they never take a back seat. The more attention lavished on these surfaces ~ a superior paint job, or fine polish on a mahogany table, the more handsome the accents placed on it will appear.

Ideally the arrangement of the dance should create a pause and draw the viewer in... But if it is not well balanced, regardless of the beauty of the objects involved, it will not be pleasing to the eye.

The most fascinating groupings invariably include contrast of color, texture, shape and scale. Pairing the old with the new and the rough with the smooth has the makings for a fresh new dance. Take a look around your castle, do your accessories need new partners?

  1. Hi Vicky! Do you ever have some problems creating just the right dance combination on some pieces of furniture? I sure do. Some pieces are just so easy & others are stubborn & don't look quite right with anything. :0{

    When I saw you title, I thought you were going to talk about moving furniture around. I made some major gouges last month moving furniture & haven't lived it down yet. http://fourpawsco.blogspot.com/2009/01/uh-oh-or-my-name-is-mud.html

  11. Vicky, You are making me question my judgment. I hope that my accessories and arrangements are pleasing. I shake things up a bit, but I don't change things as often as I should. I like what I like. It's comforting to come home to. However, I do need to re-do my living room, but I am holding out for a sofa, loveseat, chair and ottoman that are comfortable for a petite person. I don't want to feel like Edith Ann when I am sitting on my couch. My current furniture is comfortable. It's just getting faded and worn. LIke me. ~ Robyn

  15. Another super post Vicky!

    My strategy for accessorizing is; I first of all ensure it is included in my overall decorating budget and....purchase only things that I love. By doing so I've discovered, it makes for perfect partners and a harmonious dance routine.

    You are such a talented writer....and my dear if you are OLD at twenty-eight, then I am
    A-N-C-I-E-N-T....smiles. {{{{Brenda}}}

  20. I was never a good dancer and never will be. My accessories, such as they are, usually end up with an unrelated partner, due to my trying to find a spot for the latest gewgaw that has come my way, usually as a gift. I really don't have the eye, available space, or the talent to put together a pleasing vignette.

  23. I'm back. Such a nice site. I like how you describe the table vignettes as a dance floor. You can always change up the partners, depending on season and mood. I love these vignettes, because they give a wordless -- and very interesting -- introduction to the homeowner! cheers -s
