Done ~ Concrete Counters

My son in law finally got the counters done. I took some pictures along the way to share with you. He did a beautiful job. We used three different colors of stain. You apply these in three different spray bottles. Then he put 8 coats of sealer, to give them a smooth touch.
The first step is to build your form, the sink has to be set at this time. Be sure to notice that he braced the area that extends out.

Then he put in the wire.

The mix . . .

Be sure to protect the area all around, this is a messy job. But you pour it in and work it like any other concrete job, to get it smooth . Let it set up and remove the forms. After it dries , you spray with the stain . I will share the whole kitchen later. If you have any questions, just ask away. . .

  3. Nice work on the countertops. I've put concrete countertops in two of my houses. I really love them but had a bit of trouble getting the stain to take - yours turned out very well. Well done!

  4. That finished picture at the top looks amazing! I'm sure it is a time consuming project. I guess you have to cover everything in plastic {walls and all} before you start spraying.

  7. Thanks for this post. I have always wondered who concrete counter tops were made. I wasn't sure if they were pre-made or made "fresh". I guess "fresh" is the answer! They really look great!

  10. Oh, I've often wondered about concrete countertops and now I've actually seen them in a real 'someone's' home! It's gorgeous! I love the look and the stain looks so lovely! With all the sealing, you just need to wipe them down? No treating with anything?

  14. Thank you for sharing. I remember when you showed us the concrete countertops from your powder room. I love seeing some of these in-between steps. Looks great.

QUESTION: what kind of STAIN brand do you use?

  17. Thanks everyone, If you would like to see a counter top that was done in the barn and only brought in the house when it was finished, check out my Post from the month of May, "Concrete". It is better to do it that way if you are only doing one counter.

  19. It looks beautiful, Vicky. I can't wait to see the whole thing. Your son in law is very talented. Can I use the same kind of stain for the back porch deck? What kind is it? Doesn't it get slippery when wet?

  20. An old-world charm with the look of European cottage smack dab in the middle of suburbia. Vogue concrete countertops that look hand polished adding warmth and sophistication to the dry stack backsplash. A hallmark of gorgeous and refined style.

  25. Can't wait to see more photos of this. We just finished installing new counters in our kitchen. The Mr. and I (with a little help from my father) put in 12" porcelain tiles on the countertop, 6" tiles on the backsplash of one wall, and beadboard with a row of 6" tiles on the other wall.

I always enjoy your blog; you have so many good ideas and the photos are always beautiful.

  28. I especially like this post. I adore the top photo. (Yes, I have such a big thing about "a trio of..." and the power of textures.) And I so admire the hard work put into making and finishing the counters. "We used three different colors of stain. You apply these in three different spray bottles. Then he put 8 coats of sealer, to give them a smooth touch..."

  29. I think marble slab are better than concrete counters. It give you a personlized look you want.

  30. Any chance we can see and hear how the edges were handled?

I've loved concrete counters for some time but had given up hope of having one. So great to see it actually done DIY. I just love the patina on this!
